LEON, Iowa – The Mount Ayr boy’s cross-country team saw their season come to an end last Thursday, at the 1A state qualifying meet in Leon. The state cross-country meet is this Saturday in Fort Dodge.
There were a pair of state ranked teams at the meet. Earlham was the highest ranked team, ranked 5th and the second was Van Buren ranked 14th. Earlham won the meet with a team score of 26 points. The Cardinals had the top overall finisher in David Nichols in a time of 16:36. Earlham also had the third, fourth and eighth place finishers in the race. Van Buren was the runner-up finishing with 42 points. Van Buren was led by Landry Loeffler in fifth place in a time of 17:29.
Wayne placed fourth with 121 points and Southwest Valley sixth with 165 points. Mount Ayr and Diagonal were both at the meet and did not factor into the team race. Mount Ayr had three runners at the meet led by Braylon Greenwell with a 20th place finish in 18:57. Diagonal was led by Fred Malone with a 28th place finish in 19:34.10, which was a new PR for the freshman.
After Greenwell, Mount Ayr had two other runners compete at the meet. Austin Briner placed 52nd in 23:06 and Kellon Shaffer 59th in 24:12 out of 74 total runners.
Also running for Diagonal was Owen Whittington placed 29th in a time of 19:49. The other Diagonal runner at the meet was EJ Allee with a 72nd place finish in 31:07.
Earlham and Van Buren and the individual state qualifiers will run in Fort Dodge Saturday.
