One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, November 4, 1925.)
A campaign for more rigid enforcement of the Iowa Automobile headlight law is being waged throughout the state and for the purpose of enlisting the cooperation of the people of Ringgold county, Sheriff Marion Stephens calls attention to the following notices received from the offices of the secretary of state and attorney general.
To all Peace Officers: A great deal of complaint is being received in regard to glaring headlights having caused serious accidents. In view of this face a general drive is being planned to reduce this violation to a minimum and make the month of November the “Anti Glare Month.”
Of every thousand young persons living on Iowa farms in 1920, twenty-three forsook the parental roof to go to the city during the last five years. This is shown by the 1925 state census figures, so far as they have been completed by L.F. Morgans, census director, and his workers. Despite the advances made in farm life and introduction of practically every modern improvement into the farm home the migration from rural districts to the bright lights continue.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

An organization, to be known as the Ringgold County Ministerial Association was effected Monday morning at a meeting held at 10 o’clock in the Methodist Church in Mount Ayr. Fourteen ministers, representing the various churches of the county and two evangelists attended the organization meeting.
The association, which set as it’s meeting date the first Monday of each month, will hold it’s first session December 4 at 10:30 o’clock in the Methodist Church at Diagonal. The purpose of the newly formed group will be to create interest in the churches and further the fellowship of their pastors.
Ted Defenbaugh, assumed his duties last Wednesday as janitor of the Ringgold County courthouse. He succeeds E. J. Humphreys, who recently purchased the Phillips 66 station.
Merle Butler, of Benton, who suffered severe injuries to his chest and right shoulder in and automobile accident Tuesday afternoon was taken by ambulance to Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, IA.
Grant Shiflett was re-elected as state representative over his popular Democratic opponent F.B. Maloy, by a large margin of 240 votes. Shiffett carried 14 of the 20 precincts of the county. The totals: Shiflett, 1995; Maloy 1755.

Births: November 2, son to Mr. and Mrs. Duane Knapp.. November 7, a daughter, Nancy, to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stamper.. November 2, a daughter, Sandra, to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Jackson.. October 31, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Dale Lash.. October 31, a son, Larry, to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Weis.

A new law office opened its doors in Mount Ayr on Monday. David E. Linquist of Des Moines, IA, announced he will engage in the practice of law in Mount Ayr in the Sylva Moffett building on the west side of the square.
A former Redding resident was one of the featured speakers at the fall meeting of the American Physics Society October 30-Nov. 1st at Austin, TX. He is David McDaniel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo McDaniel of Redding.
Another Ringgold county farm has qualified as Century Farms. Qualifying are Edward Bonner, (1856), R.R #2 Mount Ay, IA.
Births: October 29, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Blackmore..October 30, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Danny Weeda.
Twenty-Five Years Ago

It’s already in full use and Sunday, November 19, the public will be invited to an open house for the new Mount Ayr Medical Clinic facility, which is located next to the Ringgold County Hospital.
Cherri Bailey, a former Ringgold county resident recently received certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the Iowa Board of Nursing as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in psychiatric and mental health nursing.
Mitchell Drug Store, Inc. in Mount Ayr has again been featured in the independent 2000 superstar section of Drug Topics, the news magazine for pharmacists.
Two Mount Ayr Community high school drill team members received division I ratings at the state individual drill team contest in West Des Moines Saturday.

Ten Years Ago

On the heels of their 34-15 victory over Lynnville-Sully in the quarter finals Friday night, the Mount Ayr Raiders now advance to the class A state semi-finals against the Akron-Westfield at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls Friday.
A rare discovery was recently made by Mia Farlow while visiting her grandparents, Mary Jean and Skylar Burdette on their farm in far northwest Ringgold county. Mia, her brother, Aidan and mom Andrea took a short walk on a dirt road in western Jefferson township in search of Lake Superior agates in the glacial till soils. After a few minutes rock hunting Mia found a weathered piece of limestone with several ammonite fossil imprints. On her visit to the road cut the next day, Mia found a small shark tooth. A shark tooth in Iowa is a rare fossill, but not unheard of.
