Five Raiderettes earn All-POI volleyball honors

MOUNT AYR, Iowa – The Pride of Iowa Conference released its annual honors list for all-conference volleyball teams recently. Mount Ayr had five athletes receive honors, with four of those being first-team.
Senior Aubree Shields was one of only two players who were unanimous all-conference picks this year. The other was Lexi Clendenen from SE Warren. Also being being named first team for the Raiderettes were outside hitter Izzy Gilbertson, setter Jaylee Shaffer and defensive specialist Dannie Stewart. Abby Larson was named to the honorable mention team.
Other players on the first team were Southeast Warren’s Jessica Lillig and Lilly Rowe, and Southwest Valley’s Ray Helvie.
On the second team was Delaney Funk of Lenox, Southwest Valley’s Elin Hogan, Mackenzie Fast and Ada Lund, Martensdale-St. Marys’ Abigail White, Nodaway Valley’s Emma Boswell, Southeast Warren’s Lola Shriver and Belle Ewing and Wayne’s Brystal Peck.
Shields was a unanimous pick and had 538 kills this year in 1,123 attacks for the Raiderettes. She also led the team in digs with 302 and was second in blocks with 86. Shields served 315-for-357 with 47 aces. Shaffer led Mount Ayr in assists with 747 this season. She also had 44 kills, 129 digs, 13 blocks and served 266-for-310 with 48 aces. Gilbertson was second on the team in kills with 226. She led Mount Ayr in blocks with 87, had 67 digs and served 202-for-245 with 28 aces.
Stewart had 30 kills, five assists, 257 digs, five blocks and served 278-for-317 with 52 aces. Larson led Mount Ayr in serving this year, going 381-for-402 with 27 aces. She also had 164 digs and eight assists.
Mount Ayr finished the season 28-11 overall. The win total was the most since the 2016 season when the Raiderettes won 30 matches. This is the second time since at least the 2007 season with more than 25 match wins in a season.
