Peyton Stull kicks a 27-yard field goal for the Raiders Friday night to bring the score to 20-6. Stull was good from 33-yards earlier in the night to put the Raiders ahead 17-0 heading into halftime. Stull was also 2-for-3 on extra points on the night.
Mt. Ayr 26, I-35 6
The Raiders headed to Truro Friday night looking to defeat the Roadrunners and even up the series between to two rivals.
Mount Ayr won the toss and elected to receive and within two plays, Jaixen Frost ran the ball in from 50 yards out. The point after by Peyton Stull went through the uprights putting Mount Ayr up 7-0 early.
There wasn’t another score until late in the second, as the teams battled between the 30 yard lines.
Adler Shay ran in the Raiders second score to put Mount Ayr up 14-0.
The first half ended with the Raiders up 17-0 after a 33-yard field goal from Peyton Stull split the uprights, from about the same spot as his game winner last season.
“Not very many people get that trust from their coaches,” Stull said about the opportunity to kick from the far out. “Everyone was like you got this, go get it and a lot of high-fives afterward. It feels great.”
The Roadrunners scored after a successful drive was capped by a Logan Cassady two-yard run. The PAT failed after a bad snap, leaving the Roadrunners at six.
The Raiders saw a 27-yard field goal from Stull for their only score of the third quarter.
With 2:29 left in the game, Payton Weehler scored on a two-yard run to close the game 26-6.
The Raiders don’t kick field goals in most games, but in a contest where every point mattered, coach Derek Lambert brought out Stull and company twice, showing faith in his kicker.
“He’s always ready. He practices hard and that’s what his focus really is,” said coach Lambert. “If you have a kicker that is over on the sideline, he’s still got to be in the game mentally. It’s great to have that weapon.”
The Raider offense out produced the Roadrunners 312 yards to 231 yards, while both saw five punts, the Raiders only committed one penalty for 12 yards all night.
On the ground, the Raiders rushed 37 times for 203 yards and completed seven-of-11 passes for 109 yards.
The Raiders were led on the ground by Jaixen Frost, who ran 12 times for 108 yards, while also throwing for 109 yards.
Weehler also had a good night on the ground, rushing for 52 yards, while also having one reception for 21 yards and snagging one interception.
The Raiders were back in full force on Friday night after the Iowa Department of Public health changed quarantine guidelines, allowing those wearing masks around postive COVID cases to monitor their health but not quarantine.
“It’s great to have everybody back and have some depth and I think that came up huge for us tonight,” said coach Lambert. “This week we were able to rotate out and get fresh bodies out there. I have to give a shout out to Mr. Huntington, our principal. He’s taken a lot of heat for making us mask up every day, but what he has done and prepared us for has allowed us to get all of our guys back this week and that is one of the reasons we got everybody back.”
The Raiders will head to Leon on Friday night to close out the regular season against the Central Decatur Cardinals.
A win over the Cardinals and an I-35 win over Pleasantville will give the Raiders the conference title.
