LIBERTY CENTER, Iowa — The Mount Ayr softball team won two of the three games they played in last week. The Raiderettes improved to 8-5 overall and 5-3 in the Pride of Iowa Conference. The Raiderettes are a half-game back of Martensdale-St. Mary’s in the conference standings going into this week.
The week ended with the only setback for Mount Ayr, an 11-2 loss at Class 1A No. 10 SE Warren. Each team had a run in the first inning before SE Warren scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take control of the game. The Raiderettes cut the lead to 6-2 after the top of the fourth, but the Warhawks scored the final five runs of the game.
Mount Ayr had seven hits in the game by seven different players. Emma Reynolds, Kensie Barnes, Keely Wasteney, Payton Worthington, Tatum Friedrich, Sophia West and Alba Friedrich all had hits. MaKel Jones had the only RBI for Mount Ayr.
Wasteney took the loss after working three innings. She struck out one and walked two. Barnes pitched one-inning in relief.
Last Monday, Mount Ayr came back from being down 3-0 to East Union after the first inning to rally to win 12-11.
East Union trailed 9-4 after the fourth and 10-4 before they got the score to 11-10 after six innings.
The Raiderettes were led by Tatum Friedrich who was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. Keely Wasteney was 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Other hits came from Emma Reynolds, Dannie Stewart, Kensie Barnes, Payton Worthington and Alba Friedrich.
Mount Ayr beat Nodaway Valley 3-2 on Tuesday, June 16. The Raiderettes scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed. Nodaway Valley scored runs in the top of the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 2-2. Mount Ayr scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Mount Ayr had four hits led by Keely Wasteney who was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Kensie Barnes and Dannie Stewart each had hits. Wasteney got the win after seven innings. She struck out six and walked one batter.
