Mount Ayr softball split games against Nodaway Valley and Wayne before heading to Creston for a tournament where they were faced with Atlantic and Knoxville.
Mount Ayr 12, NV 9
On Tuesday, June 8, the Raiderettes traveled to Greenfield where they put on quite the show for fans.
Nodaway Valley’s pitcher, Whitney Lamb, had the Raiderettes confused early as the Wolverines were spotting the ball from Addy Reynolds.
Things looked bleak for the Raiderettes in a game that started off with Addy Reynolds in the circle and the Wolverines hit the first pitch right back at her with a hit to Reynolds elbow. The Raiderettes then fell into a 7-0 deficit heading into the fourth inning.
“You don’t expect the first batter of the first inning to smoke a line drive into your forearm,” said Reynolds. “It took me off balance a little bit. It took me a little bit to get my confidence up a little bit and realize okay my team’s got me.”
Things turned around for the Raiderettes in the top of the fourth as Payten Lambert kicked things off with a lead-off single. Reynolds laid down a bunt that advanced Lambert and saw herself safe on first.
Zoey Larsen took to the plate and hit a double to the fence which put the Raiderettes on the board with two runs.
“I just wanted to hit it and it just came together,” said Larsen. “I was really excited and when I came into the dugout we were pumped up and ready to go. After that we were going to do something.”
The runs shook the Wolverines and Lamb was relieved by Jorja Holliday in the circle.
Holliday struggled against the Mount Ayr bats. By the time the third out was recorded, the Raiderettes were only down by one, scoring six runs.
The fifth inning went well for Mount Ayr as well, as they scored four.
The Wolverines put Lamb back in the circle and the Raiderettes struggled to hit Lamb once more but was able to put two more on the board to lead 12-7.
Nodaway Valley was only able to score two in the next two innings as the Raiderettes took the win.
Reynolds pitched the entire seven innings, allowing 12 hits, nine runs, walking two and striking out eight.
The defense behind Reynolds committed three errors and 21 putouts on 29 total chances.
At the plate, the Raiderettes were led by Halsie Barnes. She saw two runs off three hits that included two RBI, two doubles and one single.
“There has been a few ways to attack us, they chose to crowd the plate and we have to find a little better gameplan with that,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “I told the girls, it’s hard 7-0 but we had some good shots. You felt like it was going to turn and once it did we really got going.”

Wayne 6, Mount Ayr 0
Friday night, June 11, did not bode well for the Raiderettes as the Wayne Lady Falcons came to town.
Reynolds was back in the circle for Mount Ayr and a pitchers duel ensued between Reynolds and one of the leading pitchers in the Pride of Iowa in Sterling Berndt.
It wasn’t until the fifth inning that any runs were scored.
Wayne was able to record a single and with one out on the board after a sacrifice bunt, the Lady Falcons saw two RBI to get the scoring going.
The Raiderettes went down in order to close out the fifth.
The sixth saw a Lady Falcon solo home run and a run walked in with loaded bases.
Wayne would close the contest with two more runs in the seventh and Berndt recorded 12 strikeouts throughout the night.
“She’s a heck of a pitcher,” said coach Ruggles. “If I had to list the pitchers in our area the top three pitchers, Sterling Berndt is going to be one of those names. She was good tonight, she knew she had to be and she did a great job.”
Reynolds allowed 10 hits, six runs and walked three through the seven innings, while also recorded seven strikeouts.
Despite the shutout, the Raiderettes committed only two errors and had 21 putouts on 29 total chances.
At the plate, the Raiderettes mustered only one hit in 22 at-bats and reached base on a hit by pitch.
Halsie Barnes recorded a single for the Raiderettes lone hit.
“We fought. We could’ve been blown out, but we weren’t,” said coach Ruggles. “We needed some critical calls to go our way to kind of flip it, but we never got that.”

Knoxville 4, Mt. Ayr 3
The Raiderettes then took on the Knoxville Panthers in a contest that saw the Raiderettes come up one run short.
The Raiderettes put up one run in the first, before Knoxville added two of their own.
The Panthers kept the Raiderettes off the board in the second, but tacked on one more to go up 3-1.
Mount Ayr and Knoxville both scored one in the third and in the final inning of the contest, the Raiderettes were only able to score one in a game that ended due to the time limit.
Reynolds was back in the circle for Mount Ayr, allowing four runs on five hits and four strikeouts.
In the field the Raiderettes committed two errors and 15 putouts on 25 total chances.
At-bat, the Raiderettes saw nine hits, three runs and one walk.
By the end of the weekend, the Raiderettes were 6-7 on the season, heading into a busy week.
“Every weekend we are playing ranked 3A and 4A teams and that’s good for us and hard on us at the same time,” said Ruggles. “There’s some frustration in that dugout and you can tell there’s times we want to get that hard win and we just haven’t got that yet.”

The Raiderettes were back on the diamond Monday night as they traveled to Humeston for a contest against Mormon Trail.
The Raiderettes put themselves back in the win column and saw productive at-bats, scoring 11 runs in the first inning.
The second inning saw eight runs come across the plate, as subs came in for some experience at the plate.
In the third and final inning of the contest, the Raiderettes put one run on the board to make it 20-0.
The Mount Ayr defense got the three outs needed and put themselves back at .500 with a record of 7-7.
“Sometimes it’s good to get some frustration out that we had from this weekend,” said Ruggles. “It was good to see everyone get an at-bat which is part of the process to get a letter. We did our job tonight which is what we need to do.”
