It was a busy week for the Raiderettes last week, playing three games, one on the road to Greenfield and two at home on Thursday in a triangular.
On Tuesday, September 7, the Raiderettes traveled to Greenfield to face the Nodaway Valley Wolverines.
The Wolverine squad was prepared and won three straight sets against the Mount Ayr squad, 25-18, 25-12 and 25-11, givng Mount Ayr its first loss on the season.
In the loss, the Raiderettes mustered eight kills on 67 attempts, seven assists and were 36-42 from the line with two aces.
With the day off on Wednesday, the Raiderettes were able to prepare for a triangular against Pleasantville and Clarke in a non-conference triangular.
The Raiderettes began the night against a Trojan team that was 1-2 on the season, but a strong team nonetheless.
Mount Ayr defeated the Trojans in set one 25-20 before getting a 25-18 win in set two, securing the win.
Against Pleasantville, the Raiderettes had 19 assists and 21 kills on 47 attempts.
On defense, the Raiderettes had two blocks and 18 digs and from the serve line went 41-of-44 with seven aces.
The Raiderettes then faced a Clarke team whose record did not show their level of skill.
The Raiderettes were able to get a set one win, 25-19, and in set two 26-24, but at one point it looked as through the Indians would come back and take the win and take us to set three.
A late game timeout by coach Kristen Graham had the girls talking strategy in the huddle.
The Raiderettes came out and put the game away to go 5-1 on the season, besting their record from a season ago.
Coaches Kristen Graham and Brandie Ruggles were excited that the girls could come back after a loss and play at a high level.
“It means they can come back after a loss and move on,” said coach Graham. “How they responded at practice yesterday and tonight at the game that they can do it.”
Coach Ruggles echoed the same views.
“It shows they can turn the page,” said coach Ruggles. “We really wanted to compete with Nodaway and everyone was so amped we lost the flow of what we’ve been having and that’s what we talked about tonight. When you relax things just kind of happen and that’s when they experience a lot of success.”
Speaking on the huddle towards the end of the game against Clarke, the Mount Ayr coaches praised the leadership of their team.
“They calmed themselves down,” said coach Ruggles. “When we took that huddle they were like we got this, this is what we need to do and that goes to show that they control it. The leaders on the floor are wonderful this year.”
