The Mount Ayr golf program looks a little different this year at the head coach spot.
Head coach Kelly Shaffer is entering her first season as head coach of the Raiders and Raiderettes and is joined by Mount Ayr graduate and former Raiderette golf state qualifier Abbey Schafer, at the assistant coach spot.
“I am really excited for my first season with the Mount Ayr golf teams,” said coach Shaffer. “I have an experienced assistant coach, Abbey Schafer, who is very familiar with the Mount Ayr golf program and is excited to contribute back as a coach.”
The Raiderettes lost Melana Haley and Hallee Stewart to graduation, but return letterwinners Emmalee Schafer, Linsie Barnes and Mallory Weehler.
The Raiders had no seniors last year and return Tony Deleske, Drew Ehlen, Xander Harmening and Keye Willis.
The members of the Raiderette team include senior Emmalee Schafer, juniors Mallory Weehler and Linsie Barnes, sophomore Lilly Fuller and freshman Alana Doolittle.
The Raiders include seniors Xander Harmening and Tony Deleske, junior Drew Ehlen, sophomores Nick Roemer, Jarred Larson and Keye Willis and freshman Cain Harmening, Kash Wasteney, Jayden Levy, Rylon Larsen, Quinn Coulson, Louden Main, Dylan Graham and Trevin Victor.
“We have a wonderful group of students, all who make practice enjoyable,” said Shaffer. “The players are working hard and have great energy for wanting to get better. They are putting in time on their own, working hard at practice, asking great questions and enjoying the game of golf.”
Coach Shaffer is excited for the first meet of the season and seeing what the teams are capable of.
“The teams look good as we begin the season,” said Shaffer. “Spring has not been favorable for playing much golf outside, so we are looking forward to nicer weather and getting more playing time and really seeing the players’ potential. Our team chemistry is great and the whole team enjoys getting together for practice. The enthusiasm for getting better is elevated and I expect good things to be shown from our teams this season.”
