Mount Ayr 34,
Earlham 0
The Raiders showed off versatility last Friday on the road against the Earlham Cardinals.
The in 34-0 victory that put them at a 6-1 record, the Raiders threw for 206 yards, the most in one game this season for Mount Ayr, while russing for 177 yards on 13 carries.
The Raiders showed that despite an identity of a run-first team, quarterback Jaixen Frost sling the ball and win through the air.
The senior quarterback completed 11-of-13 passes and three touchdowns on the night.
Fellow senior, Jaydon Knight, was the receiver on six of those passes, gaining 100 yards and a touchdown, while senior Drew Ehlen caught two passes for 39 yards and two touchdowns.
Another senior, Braydon Pierson, caught three passes for 67 yards.
Pierson and Knight stayed busy on the ground too, rushing for 130 yards combined and two touchdowns.
Pierson carried the rock 16 times for 59 yards and a touchdown, while Knight carried the ball five times for 71 yards and a score.
The Raiders put up 383 yards and only punted the ball once, in the victory.
The Raider defense saw success as well, allowing the Cardinals to gain 196 yards of total offense, mostly on the ground.
It was a no-fly zone for Earlham who completed three-of-eight passes for 28 yards and one interception, caught by Raider defensive back Tyler Martin.
On the ground, the Cardinals rushed for 168 yards on 53 attempts, the majority from Earlham stand-out Brody Morrison who rushed 28 times for 109 yards.
The Raiders forced four punts on the night, while also collecting three sacks.
The Raiders are having a lot of fun this season and aren’t quite ready for the season to come to a close.
“It’s a lot of fun for us and we are coming together as a team and playing as one,” said Jaixen Frost. “It feels good to win with your guys and your best friends.”
Coach Ryan Victor is also enjoying the 2022 season and can’t imagine being anywhere else.
“Winning is fun right, but that’s not what’s making this fun, it’s the kids,” said coach Victor. “I enjoy going to practice every day because I know they are going to bring it and practice hard. It’s fun when you have kids buying in to what we are selling. The kids are awesome and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else with anybody else.”
The victory didn’t come without cost, though, as three starters went down with injuries and the Raiders looked at the “next man mentality”.
“You’ve got to be positive and it’s always next man up,” said Frost. “We aren’t going to be here next year and they know that and know they have to step-up when things come their way and they always preach, you’re only one play away and that’s exactly what’s going to happen this week and they are going to get to play.”
Coach Victor echoed his senior quarterback.
“Every coach in the state, or even the country right now is telling everyone that’s a freshman, or sophomore, that they aren’t a freshman or sophomore anymore,” said coach Victory. “We put our guys in, they get reps during the week because we believe that this is a tough game and you’ll have those bumps and bruises. It’s our seniors year and our seniors have to make sure they lead these young kids because they want to get the most out of anybody that steps onto this field.”
The Raiders finish out the regular season this Friday at home against Southwest Valley.
