Lynnille-Sully 62, Mount Ayr 33
The Raider football season ended last Friday in Sully after the Raiders lost a battle with the Lynnville-Sully Hawks.
The Hawks showed why they were a run-first team from the beginning after junior Corder Noun Harder rushed for a Hawk single game record of 276 yards, with two touchdowns.
The Raiders tried to find an answer for the high-powered offense that rushed for 387 total yards, but were unsuccessful.
The Raider offense produced yards too, though, rushing for 145 yards and passing for 255.
Between both offenses, the fans saw 845 yards between both teams.
The defenses, on both sides of the ball, had their work cut out for them with the offenses producing the yards they did.
The Raiders had one takeaway, an interception by Jaixen Frost, while the Hawks took two interceptions from the Raiders.
Both teams held onto the ball on the ground, however, with no fumbles from either team.
The Raider rushers were led by Frost who rushed 10 times for 61 yards, while Braydon Pierson had 10 carries for 41 yards.
Jaydon Knight got in on the action as well with six carries for 31 yards.
Through the air, Frost completed 17-of-34 passes with one interception (the second came on a wildcat formation throw from Knight) for 255 yards and four touchdowns.
Frost found five different receivers on the night, however, Knight was his go-to with six completions for 92 yards and three touchdowns.
Pierson caught four passes for 81 yards, while Tate Dugan caught five for 65 yards.
The Raider defense saw recorded one interception and had one blocked PAT from Tate Dugan.
Lynnville-Sully’s quarterback was untouched throughout the night with no sacks allowed, however, the Raiders did collect three tackles-for-loss and 30 total tackles.
The Raiders fell behind early in the contest, 22-0 before the Raiders found Riley Stark in the endzone for a 13-yard touchdown pass.
The Raiders were unable to close the gap with the Hawks, only getting within two scores of the home team.
The Raiders finished the season with a record of 8-2 and just a couple games shy of the UNI-Dome.
Senior Jaixen Frost was sad to see the season end, but had words of encouragement for the guys coming up in the program.
“I’m just trying to hold my emotions together, but trying to be a good role model for the younger guys” said Frost. “They have an expectation to live up to, a standard, just like we did and good luck to them.”
Overall Frost was happy with how the season went.
“I love playing with these guys, we played pretty good, obviously didn’t make the goal of going to the Dome, that’s everyone’s goal, but I’ll miss playing with these guys, I had a fun time doing it.” said Frost.
Another senior, Jaydon Knight, embraced coach Ryan Victor after the game, thanking him for putting time in to coach the team.
Knight was reflective on the season after the loss.
“The program in Mount Ayr is great, it’s tradition, love playing for them,” said Knight. “I love playing with my teammates. It’s been the best four years of my life. I’m proud of the way the players developed. I’m proud of the way the underclassmen developed as players, as people, we were all better men because of football and that’s what the game is all about.”
Coach Victor was sad to see the season end but wasn’t hanging his head.
“My heart breaks for these seniors. I don’t cry much and I feel like I’m gonna, with the amount of effort and time these guys put in and they are just amazing young men,” said coach Victor. “Lynnville-Sully is a good football team. There are no ifs ands or buts about it. We knew they wanted to run the ball. Props to Lynnville. They started fast and stayed fast and they are fast. They aren’t overly big but speed kills at this level and they were able to get to the edge on us.”
