The middle school boys basketball teams got their season started off this week with a couple of victories with each group. Each team played Southwest Valley Monday night with the 8th grade taking the win 45-33 and the 7th grade 51-11. Jaxsen Walter had a nice game for the 8th graders scoring 11 points and going 3-4 from the freethrow line. Dyson Thompson was our leading scorer with 16 on the night. Adler Reed had 7, Drew Graham 5, Hayes Stogdill 2 and Avery Wolfe 2. Avery was not able to play in the second half as he was hit square in the nose and had to be taken to the hospital. We hope there isn’t a fracture and he can rejoin the team for Tuesday night’s game. The score was tied going into the 4th 27-27 but the 8th grade was able to pull ahead with some good free throw shooting at the end. The 7th graders were led by the hot hand of Ben Coulson with 18 points. Drayden Thompson added 10, Isac Dugan 6, Kellon Shaffer 6, Jesse Shelman 6 and Evan Ruggles with 5. The 7th grade did a great job of running the floor and finding the open man. They communicated well defensively and held SWV to only 3 made field goals on the night.
Our next action was at Bedford on Tuesday. The 8th grade pulled out a tight victory 41-37 while the 7th grade dominated 42-17. The 8th grade struggle with turnovers and missed shots but played well enough defensively to get the win. Dyson Thompson finished the game with 19 points, Jaxsen Walter 8, Avery Wolfe 8, Adler Reed 4 and Hayes Stogdill 2. We did not shoot the ball very well and we didn’t take care of the ball on offense. We have to do a better job of passing and cutting for our offense to improve. Bedford is a tough place to play though and the boys did a great job of battling through adversity to get the win.
The 7th grade was led by Ben Coulson again with 12 points, Isac Dugan with 10, Drayden Thompson 6, Evan Ruggles 4, Kellon Shaffer 4, Jesse Shelman 4 and Jesus Lozano with 2. The boys did a great job of dribble driving to the basket and finishing. We played good solid defense and took good shots offensively. A couple of things we need to work on are defensive positioning and rebounding.
