Bedford 55,
Mount Ayr 44
Mount Ayr had a tough outing last Friday night against the Bedford Bulldogs, falling 55-44 to bookend their winter break with a pair of Pride of Iowa losses.
The Bulldogs came out fast Friday night, putting the Raiders down early, 16-11 after the first eight minutes. The first quarter ended with a Mount Ayr technical foul on coach Bret Ruggles, in an attempt to light a fire under his guys.
“I tried to buy a technical foul tonight, I haven’t done that in a long time,” said Ruggles. “Did a terrible job at it, I got it at the quarter and should’ve had it during the corner to try and get some energy to flip back over to us.”
The Bulldogs extended their lead further in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 32-20 lead.
Into the third quarter, it looked as through the Raiders would turn things around, outscoring Bedford 20-4 to take a 40-36 lead as that quarter expired.
Unfortunately, for Mount Ayr, the Bulldogs were able to answer back in the fourth, reversing the third quarter and outscoring Mount Ayr 19-4.
“We got into hero ball, where a guy starts to take over the game and takes more shots versus using your teammates,” said coach Ruggles. “We had a pretty calm half and had a great third quarter.”
Coach Ruggles was happy with the third quarter, but explained the wind just came out of their sails in the fourth and were unable to finish the game on top.
“I’ve seen it a thousand times in basketball where you make that miracle run and get up four and the wind just comes out of your sails,” said coach Ruggles. “It took all of our energy to get there and we just couldn’t push it forward.”
The Raiders saw two scorers in double digits with Jaixen Frost leading the team with 15 points and Braydon Pierson scoring 14.
The Raiders saw 11 steals on the night, compared to their 15 turnovers.
As a team the Raiders shot 30.8 percent from three point territory, while hitting 60 percent of their shots from the free-throw line.
The loss dropped the Raiders to 7-2 on the season, with both losses coming to Pride of Iowa teams, behind Central Decatur and Bedford, in first and second, respectively.
