Mount Ayr 47,
SWV 41
The Mount Ayr Raiderettes secured their second win of the season over their Pride of Iowa rival in the Southwest Valley Timberwolves last week, by a score of 47-41.
The Raiderettes started off fast, leading by 14 in the first quarter, before the Timberwolves made up ground in the second to trail at halftime 28-17.
While the game looked to be in the bag for the Raiderettes, the Timberwolves began to claw their way back into the fight, trailing by only five points heading into the final eight minutes.
Mount Ayr overcame the Southwest Valley combeack attempt and held them at bay in the fourth quarter to secure a close-call win.
“We didn’t let our offense work and tried to force the situation,” said coach Thad Streit. “It got ugly and it shouldn’t have been that close.”
Knight came in during the seocnd half and put up 11 points, hitting four-of-eight buckets, recording three steals and four rebounds.
Coach Streit has been excited about her production late in games for the Raiderettes.
“She brings energy, a tenaciousness, she’s a competitor,” said coach Streit. “For two nights in a row she gave us that spark.”
With just a day between this victory and a big matchup in Central Decatur, Streit knew they had things to clean up.
The Raiderettes had 14 turnovers on the night and 16 fouls.
“We have to get better,” said Streit. “That was a bad offensive performance, we turned the ball over and we didn’t guard.”
Mount Ayr shot 33.3 percent from the field, while hitting 12-of-19 free-throws on the night which was led by Tegan Streit’s 12 point performance, Breya Nickle’s 11 points and four steals and Knight’s 11 points.

Mount Ayr 39, CD 28
The Raiderettes hosted the Central Decatur Cardinals last Thursday night and secured their 10th win of the season, defeating their close Pride of Iowa rivals 39-28.
Linsie Barnes had a break out night against the Cardinals, proving hard to stop under the bucket.
Barnes secured a team-high 10 points on the night, making five-of-eight buckets, eight rebounds and recording one block.
The Raiderettes found themselves behind early, however, heading into halftime, the game was tied at 19 making the second-half a brand-new ball game.
A running theme this season for Mount Ayr has been the girls stepping up and making their own adjustments, something coach Streit has been happy to allow.
“I’m going to give credit to the girls again because at halftime we had foul trouble and went into our zone defense and they came in at halftime and told me the zone was working and didn’t want to switch it,” said coach Streit. “I said okay and thought we played pretty good man defense but they [Central Decatur] only scored two points in the third quarter. Outstanding defense by our girls.”
Senior Linsie Barnes talked about Mount Ayr’s decision to stay in zone defense and the trust coach Streit has in the girls to listen to game decisions.
“He knows what he’s doing, obviously, but when you’re in the game you know what shooters are on and off and they had a couple of good outside shooters and we needed to make sure we crashed the boards good,” said Barnes. “We know it’s a big rival and came in knowing it was going to be a dogfight and we pulled through.”
The second-half proved to be the difference in the game, along with the Raiderette zone defense.
Mount Ayr allowed two points in the third, scoring 13 themselves, while both teams put up seven in the fourth, as the Raiderettes went on to win by 11.
The Raiderettes cleaned up their game from just a few days before, turning over the ball only seven times and getting called on 10 fouls. The Raiderettes made 17-of-42 buckets and snagged 33 rebounds and had seven steals with one block on the night.

Mount Ayr 48,
Murray 38
It was another win for the Raiderettes as they improved to 11-2 on the season after a gritty 48-38 win against the Murray Mustangs.
The Mustang offense came out strong with senior Jayda Chew who caused issues for the Raiderette defense to put Murray ahead of the Raiderettes, 10-8, after the opening quarter.
The second quarter saw on-the-fly adjustments from Mount Ayr to help put the visiting girls back in front at halftime, 23-19, but not with enough cushion to be comfortable.
The first half saw both teams struggle to figure out the referees who were calling travels on amost every other posession.
Mount Ayr’s head coach, Thad Streit, mentioned he hadn’t seen anything quite like it, but told his girls to plant their pivot foot and don’t give them a reason to call anything.
“I said be careful with your pivot. They said we were dragging our foot and changing our pivot foot. I didn’t know about that,” said coach Streit. “We talked at halftime about doing something different.”
That “something different” once again came from the players themselves, something coach Streit is seeing as an identity of the team.
“When the girls can think and make their own adjustments, they are talking about what defense will work and who is open and what won’t work, when kids can figure that out themselves it makes it so much easier,” said coach Streit. “You don’t have to call time out and explain things. Credit to the girls, they are making their own adjustments to be honest with you.”
The second half, saw the Raiderettes take command of the game, powered by sophomore Breya Nickle, who scored 16 total points on the night.
Nickle gave credit to Murray for being quicker than they thought they would be, but also to her teammates who helped her get open and make her shots.
“They are a good team, they are fast and they came out strong, I don’t think we were quite ready for it at first,” said Nickle. “Our offense was really good the second-half and their defense was so spread out it created open gaps.”
Nickle shot 53.8 percent from the field, while leading the team in rebounds with nine and steals in a three-way tie at three with MaKenna Jones and Jaxy Knight.
Tuesday night, the Mount Ayr Raiderettes traveled to Lenox to face the Tigers in a big Pride of Iowa conference matchup that will appear in next week’s Record-News.
