It was a tough week for the Mount Ayr boy’s basketball team. Not only did they play three games, but they took two losses in three games. Despite that, the Raiders are in the mix still for second place in the POI, sitting at 7-3, a half-game ahead of Central Decatur (6-3) and SE Warren (6-3).
The Raiders record sits at 9-5 overall heading into this week when they will play four games in five days. Mount Ayr will play at Stanton Monday, host Nodaway Valley Tuesday, play at Central Decatur Thursday in a big game, and host East Union this Friday. The Raiders will then host Interstate-35 on February 5 for senior night.
The Raiders opened last week with a game at Centerville where they lost 79-52. The 79 points were the second most given up by the Raiders this season. The first was 91 points in a loss to Clarke in the first game of the season. Both of those teams are out of the South Central Conference.
The Big Reds outscored Mount Ayr 23-10 in the first quarter and followed that with a 24-point second quarter to take a 47-28 lead at halftime. A third straight 20-plus point quarter by Centerville gave them a 68-40 lead going to the final quarter.
Mount Ayr shot 32-percent from the floor and made six three-pointers in the game. Jackson Ruggles led the Raiders in scoring with 20 points including going 4-for-6 from the three-point line. Jaize Frost added 10 points. Tyler Martin added 9 points and 10 rebounds.
Centerville was led in scoring by four players in double figures. Centerville shot 51.5-percent from the floor and made nine three-pointers.
A game with Clarinda, scheduled for January 23 was canceled due to weather.
The Raiders stepped back into POI play with a game at SW Valley last Thursday. There, the Raiders picked up a 55-46 win over the Timberwolves. The Raiders beat SW Valley at home on December 1, 60-54 to earn the POI sweep. The game was originally scheduled for January 9, but was postponed.
Jackson Ruggles poured in a game-high 26 points on 52-percent shooting in the game. Ruggles made 4-of-6 three-point attempts and made 2-of-3 free throw attempts. Six other Raiders scored in the game. Mount Ayr held a 30 to 20 rebound advantage in the game over SW Valley.
The Raiders then went to Corydon last Friday and played the Falcons. Wayne stumbled into the game having lost four of their last five games and their last six against the Raiders going back to the 2018 season. There, it would be the Raiders who would be surprised as Wayne upset Mount Ayr 50-47.
Wayne led 14-9 after the first quarter and 22-21 at halftime despite Mount Ayr out-scoring the Falcons 12-8 in the second quarter. Wayne would outscore Mount Ayr 15-12 in the third quarter to take a 37-33 lead to the final quarter. In the final quarter, Mount Ayr would outscore Wayne 14-13, but it wouldn’t be enough.
Mount Ayr shot 31-percent from the floor and shot only 3-for-22 from the three-point line. Tyler Martin led Mount Ayr in scoring with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Jackson Ruggles scored 10 points, had 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. Wayne’s Rayce Snyder led all scorers with 23 points and 18 rebounds. Snyder, one of the top players in the POI, joined Lenox’s Gabe Funk with career point No. 1,000 recently. Funk also recently topped the 1,000-point mark for his career. Connor Pruiett and Boudyn White added 17 and 10 points.
