Raiders fall in first round to Bedford

The Mount Ayr Raider baseball season has come to an end after a tough 6-3 loss to POI foe Bedford at home last Saturday.
The loss was the first in three games by Mount Ayr and just the second in the last 16 meetings between the schools since June of 2016. Bedford improved to 17-10 and advanced to play at Martensdale-St. Mary’s (23-7) on Tuesday, July 9 in a 1A district semifinal. The district final will be played on July 13 with the other district 16 semifinal of East Union (16-6) against SW Valley (10-15).
Last year, the Raiders won a pair of postseason games. Mount Ayr opened with a 13-3 win over Mormon Trail before collecting an upset over Coon Rapids-Bayard in the second round 3-2. The Raiders postseason run ended in the district final with a 7-5 loss to Lenox.
Bedford scored three runs in the top of the first inning, two of which came with one out in the inning.
Mount Ayr answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning to cut the Bulldogs lead to 3-1. Adler Reed singled with one out and advanced to third base on a single by Dylan Graham. Reed scored on a Jaxsen Walter RBI single.

That score stood until the third when Mount Ayr cut the lead to 3-2 with a single run in the inning. With two outs in the inning, Dylan Graham hit a solo home run to get the Raiders within one run. Bedford scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Three straight one-out singles by Silas Walston, Brody King, and Izaak Dukes accounted for the runs.
Mount Ayr answered with a run in the fourth inning to get the score to 6-3.
Neither team would score the rest of the game.
Mount Ayr had seven hits in the game. Hayes Stogdill and Dylan Graham each were 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Raiders. Graham had an RBI in the game. Other hits were from Jaxsen Walter, Drew Graham, and Adler Reed. Walter had an RBI and Reed a stolen base.
Trevin Victor started the game and took the loss after going four and two-thirds innings. He struck out four, walked three, and gave up six runs on eight hits. He faced 28 batters. Drew Graham pitched two and a third innings. He faced seven batters, struck out one, and gave up one hit.
Bedford had eleven hits in the game with five players collecting multi-hit games. Ashton Nally, Silas Walston, Brody King, Izaak Dukes, and Graham Godsey all had two hits. The five players combined to drive in all six runs with Walston and Dukes each with 2 RBI’s. The Bulldogs were issued three walks and had two players reach base after being hit by pitches. Klemit Olney started and was the winning pitcher after working three and a third innings. He faced 15 batters, struck out four, walked one, and gave up two earned runs on five hits. Marcus Knighton pitched the final three and two-thirds innings in relief. He struck out two and walked one.
