Two community events are planned to bring people together this weekend.
The Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce is kicking off the events with the annual Ayr Days Celebration Saturday, August 24. The 5th Annual Ice Cream Social at Tingley Memorial Park is planned for the following day on Sunday, August 25.
Ayr Days
The annual Ayr Days celebration around the town square begins with the Highlander Hustle, sponsored by Ringgold County Hospital. Participants are invited to wear Scottish attire for the free 5K run/walk. Registration for the Highlander Hustle begins at 7:30 a.m. in front of the Princess Theater. The 5K run will begin at 8:00 a.m.
Marketplace vendor registration also begins at 7:30 a.m. at the west door of the courthouse. Vendors will be set up from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. around the court yard.
The Mount Ayr Public Library opens at 9:00 a.m. and is hosting a puzzle marathon through 3:00 p.m.
Bill and Faye Stull will be honored as the Parade Marshals this year, leading participants around the square starting at 10 a.m. Anyone interested in entering the parade can sign up between 9:15-9:45 a.m. on the corner of Fillmore and Jefferson Street.
Immediately following the parade, cars, pickups, trucks, motorcycles and tractors participating in the show and shine will park on the south side of the square between 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dance performances by Ryann’s Dance Academy will also follow the parade, beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the basketball court.
Travis Scott with Ringgold County Conservation will be giving a presentation about reptiles and amphibians from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the shelter house on the square. Animals will be present for viewing from 12 -2 p.m.
Bring your quilt to the Ayr Days Quilt Show at the First Christian Church. Quilts can be viewed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. The church is also serving beef burgers and walking tacos between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Greater Regional Community Health Clinic will be hosting Yard Games from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the grass area on the NE Corner of the Courtyard.
A pie and ice cream social is being held at the Ringgold County Senior Center between 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Stop by the Dunk Tank and support the Raider Football team fundraiser.
Face painting will be available again this year from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the east side of the courthouse.
The Mount Ayr Lions Club will be providing kids train rides and operating the swings on the east side of the square. Inflatables and spin art will entertain kids between 11 a.m. -5 p.m.
Ride a mechanical bull and stop by the live petting zoo along North Taylor Street from 12-4 p.m.
The Carey Crowson Trio will provide live music between 1-4 p.m. on the North side of the square.
Carriage rides around town are being offered at Trails End Saloon between 1-5 p.m.
Kids can pedal their way to victory during the kids pedal pull at 2 p.m. on the east side of the square.
New this year, a foam party will also be held on the east side of the square from 3-4:30 p.m.
If you’re looking for a rest, play bingo in the shelter house from 3-5 p.m.
A bags tournament will be held starting at 4:00 p.m. on the north side of the square (in front of Still Smokin and Country Blossoms). Contact Cassie Still at 641-344-4949 for information or to sign up.
The Mount Ayr Embers will be serving a pulled pork meal starting at 4:30 p.m. on the west side of the square. This will be a free will donation meal, with all proceeds going to purchase safety equipment for the fire department. The Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department will host water games for the kids from 5-6 p.m. Sign up at 4:30 p.m. to participate.
Grab a slice of pizza from rAyr market and enjoy evening entertainment including the Keith West and Kitty Marie Magic and Illusion Show at 6 p.m.
Local talent Garrett and the Relics are playing live music from 7-10 p.m.

Tingley Ice Cream Social
The old fashioned fun gets underway with the craft and vendor show beginning at 1 and running until 7 p.m. Ken and Jennifer Callahan with Callie Corn will be providing Kettle Corn to snack on all afternoon.
Registration for the corn hole tournament also begins at 1 p.m. in the tennis court, with tournament play happening between 2 – 4 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded.
Antique cars, tractors, semi cabs and motorcycles are invited to convene along main street for a show and shine from 2 to 5: p.m. Mike Ford can be reached at 641-344-9339 with any questions.
Roger Burger will be playing live music on the tennis court from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
“Zounds the Clown” will be making an appearance along main street from 3 to 6 p.m.
Homemade pies can be dropped off at the Wagon Wheel Cafe by 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 25. A total of $500 in prize money will be split amongst the winning pie entrants.
Homemade ice cream entries will also have a chance to win prize money in two categories; Vanilla, and Anything Goes. A total of $1,000 in prize money will be split amongst the winners of the categories.
Derek Jones will be setting up a small petting zoo again this year from 2-7 p.m. Other kids activities include face painting from 4-5:30 p.m., a nickel and quarter rush on the North side of the community park at 5:30 p.m. and a kids raffle at 6 p.m.
The Carey Crowson Trio is also returning to provide live musical entertainment between 4-7 p.m.
The Ringgold County Cattlemen will begin serving hamburgers, chips and drinks at 4:30 p.m., with a free-will offering being accepted.
The Hoover Angus homemade ice cream contest and Jenny Tull homemade pie contest winners will be announced at 5 p.m. A live auction will follow, with the winning entries going to the highest bidders. Gary Hartsock is also donating a handmade bowl to go along with the samples of winning ice cream entries.
Most of the activities are provided free of charge, with free will donations accepted instead.
