A special election will be held on Tuesday, September 10 to determine whether to adopt a public measure for the Mount Ayr School District.
The Mount Ayr Community School District is asking voters to consider renewing the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) fund this September. This is not a new tax or levy. The Mount Ayr public measure is a 10-year renewal of a current levy that helps support Mount Ayr Community Schools (MACS) financially.
The renewal of this levy does not increase your property tax; it authorizes the MACS to continue the voter approved rate that has been in effect for many years so that we may continue to use the funding to support Mount Ayr students. State law requires a vote on whether to renew PPEL every 10 years.
The voted PPEL helps generate funds that can be used for specific purchases like infrastructure, equipment purchases or repairs, vehicles, buildings and grounds improvements, technology, building construction or repairs, and others listed under Iowa Code 298.2.
The district has used PPEL funds for recent purchases including:
- 2 New school buses (one with ADA lift), new school van, upgraded fencing, concrete repairs, elementary hvac units, technology updates;
- Replacement of their heating and cooling systems;
- Technology or computer purchases and repairs;
- School safety equipment;
- Grounds equipment like mowers, loaders, and cleaning machines;
- Grounds improvements like parking lots, sidewalks, lighting, and ball field improvements;
- Classroom improvements including carpet, projector screens, or equipment.
All eligible electors in the Mount Ayr School District can vote at the Ringgold County Courthouse on Tuesday, September 10. Bedford Community School District is also voting on the measure for their district on the same day at the same place.
Absentee ballots are currently available and the deadline to vote absentee in-person is Monday, September 9. More information about the election can be obtained at the Ringgold County Assessors Office or on their website.
