End season at 7-3 after falling to second ranked ACGC

This group of Raider seniors were apart of 4 consecutive playoff appearances, 3 home playoff games, 3 playoff wins and a 26-12 record over 4 years. It wasn’t meant to be.
A good start and well-played first half turned late before halftime for Mount Ayr in a 41-14 playoff loss at second-ranked ACGC.
A key Charger touchdown late in the first half gave them momentum at halftime and bled into the third quarter of the victory.
The game was the fourth time the two teams met in the past two seasons and the second straight playoff match-up.
The Raiders season ends at 7-3 while ACGC improved to 10-0.
Class A District 6 champion Madrid is the last remaining district playoff team after both Wayne and Lynnville-Sully lost in earlier rounds. Madrid advanced to the Class A quarterfinals where they will play at Lisbon (10-0) with a trip to the UNI-Dome on the line. ACGC will host Tri-Center (9-1) for a trip to the UNI-Dome for the Chargers. The Chargers are making a trip to the state quarterfinals for the third time in four years yet ACGC has not reached the UNI-Dome and state semifinals.
“We came out ready to play and that is what you have to do against a team like that. One play we scored a touchdown and then got a fumble, and had a chance to score and get up two scores. We just couldn’t get that two-score lead,” said Mount Ayr football coach Ryan Victor.
“Against a team like that you have to take advantage of your possessions and score when you can. You have to be able to slow them and put the pressure on them and that is hard to do,” said Victor.
The Raiders started the game with a bang, scoring the game’s first points just five seconds into the game on their first offensive play.
A big 48-yard touchdown run by Dyson Thompson gave the Raiders a 6-0 lead. That lead would hold until the Chargers scored the first of three first-half touchdowns on a Brexton Schneider 7-yard run to give ACGC a 7-6 lead after the first quarter.
The Chargers added a 4-yard Jathan South run with 4:00 left in the half to extend their lead to 14-6. Late in the half, a Mike Fuller 2-yard run with 45 seconds left before halftime, gave the Chargers a 21-6 lead and momentum at halftime.
The Chargers took the game over in the third quarter scoring two touchdowns in the first two minutes of the third quarter. A South 52-yard run only 14 seconds into the second half gave ACGC a 28-6 lead. On the ensuing Raiders drive a scoop and score fumble recovery touchdown by Jonathan Martinez for 21 yards gave the Chargers a 35-6 lead.
ACGC added a 31-yard Schneider rushing score to complete their 20-point third-quarter outburst to take a 41-6 lead. The Raiders added a final score late in the game on a Jackson Ruggles 15-yard run. Tyler Martin ran in the two-point conversion to get the score to 41-14.
“Overall we didn’t execute and they did and that’s how it went,” said Victor.
Mount Ayr had 270 yards of total offense in the game with 128 passing and 142 rushing yards. Quarterback Jackson Ruggles passed for 128 yards on 8-for-11 attempts and rushed for 19 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.
Running back Dyson Thompson led all Raider rushers with 105 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.
Seniors Trevin Victor and Tyler Martin led in receiving with each getting three receptions. Victor had 71 yards and Martin had 38 yards.
Defensively, the Raiders were led by senior Tyler Martin with 12.5 total tackles including 10 solo tackles. Fellow senior Jaize Frost had 8 solo tackles and Jackson Ruggles added 7.5 total tackles.
In the game, the Raiders had 42 total solo tackles. The Raiders had fumble recoveries by Trevin Victor and Trace Knapp and Ruggles had an interception in the game.
The Chargers had 358 yards of total offense, including 337 yards on 42 carries with an 8.0-yard average per rush. Senior Mike Fuller led with 106 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Jathan South added a second 100-yard rusher with 122 yards on eight carries and two scores. South’s total included a 52-yard scoring run. Junior Brexton Schneider added 90 yards on nine carries and scored twice.
Defensively, the Chargers were led by Ryder Cline with 5, Thomas Skram with 3.5, Jathan South and Xander Harwood with 3, and Ben Granzeen, Carter Richter, Taytum Bates with 2.5 each. The Chargers recovered three fumbles and had two interceptions in the game.
Mount Ayr says goodbye to a large senior class. Graduating off of this years team are Trevin Victor, Tyler Martin, Jaize Frost, Garrett Walter, Dylan Graham, Tucker Larson, Ethan Johns, and Kash Wasteney.
The Raiders will be getting a new district next year as the two-year cycle of realignments happens in 2025.
