The second game in as many nights saw the Nodaway Valley boy’s basketball team see the Raiders of Mount Ayr in town to kick-off Pride of Iowa Conference league play.
There, both teams came into the game coming off of their second game in as many days. Last Tuesday, the Raiders, who were picked to contend for the POI title this year, collected a 62-37 victory.
The Raiders came into the game having won their season opener 24 hours earlier at home against non-conference foe Clarke, 52-48. Mount Ayr has won four straight games over the Wolverines since the 2023 season. Nodaway Valley fell to 0-2 with the loss, but owns a 24-13 record over the Raiders since 2006.
“Greenfield is always a tough place to win. We came off of a four point win Monday, and we felt that we didn’t’ play all that well Monday, but to see us come out and get going in the first quarter was good for us. It set up the rest of the game and we played well,” said Mount Ayr head coach Bret Ruggles.
Ruggles said that he always gets nostalgic when his team plays at Nodaway Valley.
“We have had some really good battles up there and when they come to our place. You really know your age when you are talking to the kids about how this was one of the top matches back in the day. The games were always going to be major ball games and major implications for the POI,”he said.
Nodaway Valley played well in the first quarter, but Mount Ayr led 20-10 by the end of the quarter. The Raiders scored within the first four seconds of the game with a hoop from Trevin Victor in transition, but went cold with an 0-for-6 shooting pace over the next two and a half minutes.
Nodaway Valley got their first hoop with 5:20 left in the quarter on a Parker Schneider basket to set the score at 3-2. A Paul Berg hoop got the Wolverines within 7-4 with 4:25 left in the first quarter.
In the final three minutes of the first quarter, Mount Ayr outscored the Wolverines 12-5 to end the quarter to take a 20-10 lead.
The Raiders outscored the Wolverines 11 to 7 in the second quarter to take a 31-17 lead at halftime.
The Raiders took a lead of more than ten points for the first time in the game with 1:19 left before halftime to take a 28-17 lead on their way to a 31-17 halftime lead.
The 14-point Mount Ayr lead went to 46-22 by the end of the third quarter. The Raiders used a 13-0 run to start the third quarter to take control of the game. The Wolverines first hoop of the second half came with 2:39 left on a three pointer by junior guard Titus Hamer.
The Wolverines cut the Raiders lead to 12 points in the final quarter and scored 15 points in the final quarter. A
The Wolverines used a key 7-0 run and 10-5 run to begin the fourth quarter to cut the Raiders lead down. The Raiders however, were too far ahead for the Wolverines to get closer.
Mount Ayr junior guard Jackson Ruggles led all scorers with 26 points including a hot shooting night from the three-point and free throw line where he made three three pointers and 5-for-7 free throws. He also had six assists, five steals and four rebounds. Tyler Martin added 13 points and five rebounds and Trevin Victor chipped in seven points and five steals for the Raiders.
The two teams meet again in Mount Ayr on January 14.
