The Mount Ayr Raiderette girl’s basketball team has an opportunity to take control of the Pride of Iowa Conference girl’s basketball race this week with games over the second and third-place teams in Lenox and Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
First, however, they had a home contest last Friday against East Union, a team that was still looking for their first win.
There, the Raiderettes remained unbeaten in the POI with a 66-10 win over the Eagles.
The win set the Raidettes POI record at 5-0.
“We wanted to get this game, get in and get out without any injuries or anything and we did that,” said Mount Ayr coach Thad Streit.
“We have some big games coming up this week and it is important to have everyone ready to go for those two games,” he said.
The two games that Streit is referring to are a Tuesday home game with Lenox and a Friday road game at Martensdale-St. Mary’s. The Tigers and Blue Devils are both 5-1 in the POI and 7-2 overall. Mount Ayr has not played Lenox yet and will again in Lenox on January 28.
The Raiderettes have already hosted the Blue Devils and won, 49-39 back on December 6.
“We have to take things one game at a time. Lenox has a strong senior class and they will want to wreck things for us,” said Streit.
“I think that our bench will be important this week. I think that we have a good bench and a bench that is much deeper than most teams we play. That helps a lot in big games,” he said.
Lenox and Martensdale-St. Mary’s have to play one more time this season on January 24 at Martensdale. Lenox lost at home to the Blue Devils, 48-39 back on December 17.
Mount Ayr led 16-2 after the first quarter and took over the game in the second quarter, overwhelming the Eagles by out-scoring them 31-0 in the second quarter to take a 47-2 halftime lead.
The 35-point mercy rule running clock was activated in the second half. Mount Ayr would outscore the Eagles 19-8 in the second half.
The two teams will play later this season in Afton on February 7. Mount Ayr improved to 9-0 with the win.
Two Mount Ayr players scored in double figures to lead the way. Emma Reynolds led with 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting in the game. Izzy Gilbertson added 12 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Breya Nickle and Tatum Friedrich were close to double figures with 9 and 8 points. The Raiderettes had 38 rebounds, 18 assists, and 26 steals in the game. Nickle led in rebounds with 8 while Jaxy Knight and Gilbertson led in assists with 4 each. Knight and Dannie Stewart led in steals with each collecting 5.
