The result may have been known before the game began, but don’t tell Mount Ayr coach Bret Ruggles that.
Ruggles knows that you still have to play the games, and a conference win is a conference win.
The Raiders picked up their 5th POI win last Friday at home in an 81-32 win over East Union. The 81 points scored is a new season high, passing the Raiders 73-point output in a win at home over SW Valley on December 19.
“On our way to our goal of winning a POI championship, we have a ladder of success. The idea is that you have to get past one rung at a time and sometimes you miss rungs. We didn’t want to miss this East Union rung (win) as any POI win is valuable,” said Ruggles.
The Raiders were dominant in the game, scoring 20 or more points in three of the four quarters in the game.
The Raiders took control of the basketball game in the first quarter, taking a 27-9 lead after the opening quarter. The Raiders followed that with a 20-8 second-quarter run to take a 47-17 halftime lead.
After halftime, the Raiders added a 20-9 run in the third quarter to take a 67-26 lead to the final quarter.
The Raiders had three players reach double figures in the game. Jackson Ruggles scored 22 points and had 6 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists. Tyler Martin scored 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting and had 6 assists and 4 rebounds. Jaize Frost added 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Trevin Victor scored 9 points all of three, three-point baskets. Jaxson Greene, Louden Main, and Adler Reed each scored 6 points off the bench in the game.
The Raiders had 43 rebounds in the game to go with 22 assists and 14 steals.
“We wanted to work on our man-to-man and started in a match-up zone the first quarter to ease into things. We got up enough where we then went to work on the new stuff,” said Ruggles.
“We knew we wanted to keep them under their average point total. That was a goal,” he said. Mount Ayr is the only unbeaten POI team at 5-0. SE Warren is second at 4-1 while Martensdale-St. Mary’s, Central Decatur, and SW Valley all have two losses.
Mount Ayr will travel to East Union on February 7 in the last regular season game for both schools. The Raiders were back on the court on Tuesday, January 7 when Lenox came to town. The Raiders are then at Martensdale-St. Mary’s Friday night. Next week, the Raiders have home games against Central Decatur on Monday and Nodaway Valley on Tuesday before going to SE Warren on Thursday.
