The Mount Ayr Raiderette girl’s basketball team sits four regular season games away from running the table with an unbeaten regular season. This comes after three wins last week over Murray, SW Valley, and Wayne to improve to 17-0 overall and 12-0 in the Pride of Iowa Conference.
This week is a big one for Mount Ayr with a game at Lenox on Tuesday, January 28 and back home for senior night Friday when SE Warren is in town.
The Raiderettes close the regular season with road games on Tuesday, February 4 at Central Decatur and later that week at East Union.

“The message from this week is do your job, do your job well and get the job done,” said Mount Ayr girl’s head coach Thad Streit.
“We are getting down to the end of the season and we have a big game coming up Tuesday with Lenox. They played us very tough at home and they have a strong senior class,” said Streit.
Mount Ayr begins the week three games in front of both Lenox and Martensdale-St. Mary’s who are tied for second place in the POI at 9-3. The Raiderettes are 12-0. A win over Lenox would give the Raiderettes a tie for the POI title and two wins this week would give the POI title to Mount Ayr outright.
The week began for Mount Ayr with their last non-conference game at Murray, out of the Bluegrass Conference. Mount Ayr was looking to add a win over the Mustangs to their non-conference wins already against Lamoni, Clarke, and Worth County, Missouri.
In Murray, the Mustangs came into the game winners of four of their last five games including a win over POI foe East Union. The Mustangs also had eight wins in 12 games. The win was the seventh by Mount Ayr over Murray going back to the 2019 season. In their last 20 meetings, Mount Ayr has a 17-3 record. The Mustangs hung with the Raiderettes in the first quarter, trailing by two points, 9-7 going to the second quarter. A 15-1 second quarter run by Mount Ayr gave the Raiderettes a 24-8 halftime lead. By the end of the third quarter, the Raiderettes led 31-20 going to the final quarter. In the final quarter, Mount Ayr outscored Murray 14-6 to secure the win.
“We were in a dogfight down in Murray. I felt that we weren’t ready to go. Maybe it was a Monday game, who knows. They (Murray) were ready to go and we had to scratch and claw to overcome that first quarter,” said Streit.
Three Raiderettes scored in double-digits to lead the way. Dannie Stewart led with 15 points including making all six free throw attempts. Breya Nickle had 14 points and 8 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 blocked shots and Izzy Gilbertson had 13 points and 7 rebounds and 3 steals. The Raiderettes were ice cold from the three-point line, making 1-for-17 in the game, but were hot from the free throw line, making 12-of-16.
The second game of the week proved to be the most competitive with the Raiderettes escaping their game in Corning with a four-point, 47-43 win over the Timberwolves.
Though the Timberwolves had only three wins, tied the closest game in the POI with Mount Ayr so far.
SW Valley led 9-6 after the first quarter and held a one-point, 16–15 lead at halftime. The Timberwolves maintained the lead going to the final quarter, 31-29.
The last quarter saw a lot of scoring as the Raiderettes used an 18-12 run to close the game with a victory.
“A few of our kids just refused to lose. SW Valley is a good team and their record doesn’t reflect that. They are a scary team and always have had a roster, but for some reason they haven’t put it all together,” said Streit.
Izzy Gilbertson led Mount Ayr in scoring with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Breya Nickle scored 8 points and had 6 rebounds. Jaylee Shafer had 7 points, Jaxy Knight had 5 assists, and MaKel Jones had 5 rebounds.
Mount Ayr completed the three-game week with their third win, a 67-34 victory over the Falcons. Mount Ayr beat the Falcons at home in mid-December at home, 60-32. The 67 points were a high for the week in the three games. Wayne came into the game with a two-game win streak, but they could not maintain their momentum in the loss.
Mount Ayr led by five points, 15-10 after the first quarter and increased their lead by six points, to go up by ten, 31-21 at halftime. The Raiderettes took command of the game in the third quarter. In the third, the Raiderettes outscored the Falcons 16-4 to take a 47-25 lead. Mount Ayr followed with a 20-point fourth quarter. For the game, Mount Ayr shot a blistering 53.5-percent for the game. Mount Ayr made five three pointers and shot 16-for-20 from the free throw line.
Izzy Gilbertson had a double-double in the win with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Breya Nickle had 17 points including 11-for-14 from the free throw line, and 7 rebounds. Dannie Stewart added 12 points and made two three pointers.
The Raiderettes remain ranked No. 6 in Class 1A. The Raiderettes are one of two unbeaten teams in the IGHSAU’s Class 1A top-15. The other is top ranked Council Bluffs St. Albert.
The postseason looms for Mount Ayr and area teams and more wins will help when the brackets are released in less than two weeks.
“It’s getting toward the end of the season and we want to hold our sixth ranking. Every win will help here when brackets are out. We have only four games left and are trying to reach our goal and win the POI title,” said Streit.
