Six MACHS students qualify for state speech contest

Six Mount Ayr High School students will be competing at the Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) state individual speech contest Saturday, March 15 in Ames. Mount Ayr had 13 entries in the district contest held last Saturday, and eight of them qualified for the state speech contest in a couple weeks.
Senior Brittney Gilliland received a division 1 rating for her Original Oratory titled “Time is a Phenomenon” and Prose titled “Chicken Big.” Her younger sister, Bria Gilliland, also received a division 1 rating for her Original Oratory titled “Smile.”
Senior Allison Anderson received division 1 ratings for both Storytelling titled “The Dinky Donkey,” and Poetry titled “Alone.”
Senior Anna Greenland received a division 1 rating for her Original Oratory titled “Change Amidst Loss,” and senior Kate James received a division 1 rating for her Literary Program titled “Mental Health Matters.”
Freshmen Brodie Howell will also be moving on, receiving a division 1 rating for Poetry, which is titled “Perfect.”
Five students will not be taking their performances on to state, receiving division 2 ratings for the following:
Kate James – radio broadcast
Eva England – prose
Cordell Clemens – storytelling
Lacey Weeda – prose
Kelbey Greenland – prose
“To say I am proud of these kids would be an understatement,” said Shaun Kniep. “They performed, they filled in, and they worked rooms,” Kniep stated, “I appreciate them all very much!”
Mount Ayr Community High School (MACHS) was one of four southwest district host sites last Saturday. Roughly 250 students from 17 school districts visited Mount Ayr over the weekend.
After a busy weekend for school activities across the state, the MACHS POI honor band performed at Graceland University on Monday, March 3.
