Three dominant wins in four games for the Mount Ayr baseball team helped them improve to 11-3 overall and 8-3 in the Pride of Iowa Conference.
Mount Ayr is tied for second place with Lenox and SE Warren.
Mount Ayr opened this week with a game at Bedford on Monday and at Lenox on Tuesday. The Raiders return hom Friday to play state ranked Martensdale-St. Marys. The next week starts with Mount Ayr at home on Monday, June 30 against SW Valley and a road game at Wayne on Tuesday, July 1.
The Raiders played the first of two games against Central Decatur on Monday, June 16 and again on Friday, June 20. The Raiders beat the Cardinals both times, winning by a combined score of 36-0.
On Monday, the Raiders beat the Cardinals at home, 10-0 to earn their ninth win. Mount Ayr scored two runs in the first and a single run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. That lead held until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Raiders put up seven runs to get the score to 10-0.
Adler Reed pitched a 2-hit shutout after facing 16 batters. He gave up two runs over five innings of work and struck out eight batters.
Mount Ayr had eight hits in the game with three players with multi-hit games. Reed was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI’s and Tate Dugan was 2-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Tyler Still also had a pair of hits. The other hits came from Rowan Sackett and Trevin Victor who also had RBI’s. Jaxsen Walter reached base twice by walk while Stogdill, Sackett and Drew Graham each reached base via a walk.
Mount Ayr beat Nodaway Valley in Greenfield on Tuesday, June 17, 13-2 in a contest that went the whole game.
Nodaway Valley scored first in the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Mount Ayr would outscore the Wolverines 13-1 over the next six innings to get the win.
Mount Ayr took the lead for good with a three-run top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Raiders followed with a four-run top of the fourth to extend their lead to 7-1. Mount Ayr led 9-1 before Nodaway Valley scored their last run in the sixth inning to get the score to 9-2.
The Raiders scored the last runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning with four runs.
Mount Ayr had 11 hits in the game. Jaxsen Walter led Mount Ayr at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Adler Reed, Rowan Sackett and Trevin Victory each had two hits in the game. Sackett had 3 RBI’s and Tyler Still had 2 RBI”s. Other hits were from Tate Dugan and Tyler Still. Jaxsen Walter was the winning pitcher after seven innings of work. He struck out five, walked two and gave up two runs on six hits.
The only loss for the Raiders came at home to SE Warren on Thursday, June 19, 8-5. The game was a pitching match up early as Mount Ayr led 1-0 after four innings having scored the first run in the bottom of the first.
The game turned in the top of the fifth when SE Warren scored five runs to take a 5-1 lead. Mount Ayr scored three in the fifth, to get within 5-4. SE Warren would outscore the Raiders 3 to 1 over the final two innings to claim the game, 8-5.
Mount Ayr used two pitchers. Trevin Victor started and pitched into the fifth inning before giving way to Tate Dugan. Victor pitched four and a third innings and gave up five runs on four hits. He struck out four, walked five and faced 25 batters.
Dugan finished the game, pitching two and two-thirds innings, facing 17 batters, striking out three and walking four batters.
Mount Ayr had three hits in the game. Tate Dugan was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s and Rowan Sackett had a hit and RBI. Hayes Stogdill reached base three times by walks.
The week ended with a dismantling of Central Decatur in Leon, 26-0. The Raiders led 1-0 after the first inning, but erupted for 24 second inning runs to take a 25-0 lead. The last run for Mount Ayr was scored in the top of the third inning.
Mount Ayr had 12 hits in the game and had seven walks. Tyler Still and Rowan Sackett each had two hits to lead the Raiders. The other hits came from Adler Reed, Hayes Stogdill, Jaxsen Walter, Tate Dugan, Avery Wolfe, Drew Graham, Dylan Swank, and Manny Hyde had the other hits for the Raiders. Wolfe reached base three times by walk and Adler Reed and Hayes Stogdill each had two stolen bases.
Drew Graham pitched a two-hit shutout to earn the win. Graham faced 15 batters in four innings striking out six and walking no one.
