Finish year 17-5 after loss to Lenox, 9-7
The fine baseball season put together by the Mount Ayr Raiders came to an end on Saturday, July 12 in Lenox.
The Raiders fell to the Tigers 9-7 in a Class 1A district final game.
The Raiders ended the season 17-5 while Lenox won their 20th game with the win and advanced to play state ranked Martensdale-St. Mary’s in the Class 1A Substate 7 championship on Tuesday, July 15.
The two teams met twice this season in the regular season. Mount Ayr won both with a 12-8 win on July 3 and a 9-5 Mount Ayr win on June 6.
The Raiders took their only lead in the top of the second inning when they scored three runs. In the inning, Mount Ayr plated three runs to take a 3-0 lead. Lenox would take control of the game in the bottom of the third inning, scoring six runs and batting around in their batting order to take a 6-3 lead after three innings. Two more runs scored for Lenox in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 8-3.
Mount Ayr fought back in the top of the fifth, pushing two runs home to get the score within 8-5 after five innings. Lenox would score their last run in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 9-5. The Raiders tried to come back in the top of the seventh when they scored twice to get the score to 9-7, but could get no closer.
Mount Ayr used two pitchers in the game in Jaxsen Walter and Trevin Victor. Walter took the loss after working four innings. He gave up five runs on nine hits.
Walter struck out two and walked two. Victor pitched two innings in the game. Victor gave up four runs on two hits while striking out three and walked two batters.
Laramie Stoakes was the winning pitcher after starting and working five and a third innings. Stoakes struck out ten batters, walked three and gave up five runs on seven hits.
Dawson Evans pitched an inning and two thirds to earn the save.
Mount Ayr had 10 hits in the game. Three Raiders had multi-hit games. Adler Reed, Tate Dugan, and Tyler Still each had two hits.
Still drove in two runs and Dugan had 1 RBI. Other hits came from Rowan Sackett, Jaxsen Walter, Drew Graham and Trevin Victor. Still and Graham each had 2 RBI’s while Hayes Stogdill and Victor each had a RBI. Avery Wolfe reached base twice on walks and Stogdill had one walk.
Lenox had 11 hits in the game. Gabe Funk led going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored. Brogan Peterson added a 2-for-4 night with 3 RBI’s.
Raiders win postseason opener, 13-0
The Mount Ayr Raider baseball team began their postseason tournament trail run on July 5 at home. The game at home was a match up against the Sidney Cowboys out of the Corner Conference. In the game, the Raiders would score all 13 of their runs in only two innings to end the game 13-0 after five innings.
Mount Ayr sophomore pitcher Jaxsen Walter pitched a rare perfect game. Walter pitched a five-inning complete game where he did not allow a baserunner via a walk or a hit. He struck out seven batters. Walter faced 15 batters in the game.
The Cowboys end their season 3-13. Mount Ayr improved to 16-4 with the win and advanced to the next round of the district tournament.
The Raiders took control of the game in the first inning, scoring five runs for a 5-0 lead. Neither team scored in the second inning and the Raiders put the game away in the bottom of the third with eight runs to extend their lead to 13-0.
Mount Ayr had nine hits in the game with three players having multi-hit games. Hayes Stogdill, Walter, and Tyler Still each had two hits. One of Stogdill’s hit was a triple and Walter and Still each had a double. Still had 4 RBI’s while Trevin Victor and Walter each had 2 RBI’s. Other Mount Ayr hits were from Adler Reed, Rowan Sackett, and Trevin Victor. Other Raiders with RBI’s were Sackett, Tate Dugan, Drew Graham, and Avery Wolfe.
Sidney did not have a hit in the game. Michael Hensley started and took the loss after working three innings. He struck out one, walked three and gave up 13 runs on eight hits. He faced 23 batters. Kolt Payne pitched one-inning in relief.
Raiders scratch out Bedford win, 3-2
A well played ball game saw the Mount Ayr Raiders come from behind to advance to the district final game with a 3-2 win over Bedford on Tuesday, July 8. The game was held at Bedford. The Raiders improved to 17-4 with the win while Bedford ends the season 23-6. Both teams entered the game winners of their last five games.
The two teams met back on June 25 with Bedford winning 6-5. Coming into the game, Bedford had won two games in a row. Overall, in the last 33 meetings, Mount Ayr is 23-10.
Only two innings had runs scored in the game. Neither team could score a run on the first time through each other’s order as the game was scoreless after three innings. Bedford scored the first runs of the game with two in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the fifth inning as the Bulldogs maintained their 2-run lead with two innings to play. In the top of the sixth inning, the Raiders were able to break through, scoring three times to take a 3-2 lead.
That lead would hold up as the Raiders would keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in both the sixth and seventh innings to claim the contest.
Adler Reed was the winning pitcher for Mount Ayr. Reed went six innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He struck out four and walked seven. Trevin Victor pitched a scoreless seventh inning to get the save.
Mount Ayr had eight hits in the game with a pair of players with multi-hit games. Adler Reed and Hayes Stogdill each had two hits in the game in four at-bats and a run scored. Stogdill had an RBI in the game.
Other Mount Ayr hits came from Tate Dugan, Drew Graham, Avery Wolfe, and Trevin Victor. Dugan and Graham each had RBI’s in the game. Rowan Sackett reached by walk while Adler Reed stole two bases and Trevin Victor had one steal in the game.
Bedford had three hits in the game, one-each from Tim Rogers, Graham Godsey, and Klemie Olney. Klemit Olney started and worked five and two thirds innings. He struck out six, walked three and gave up two runs on five hits. He faced 22 batters.
Marcus Knighton was the losing pitcher after an inning and two thirds. He struck out three and gave up one-run on two hits while facing seven batters.
