MOUNT AYR, Iowa — The tri-county area board that manages the areas landfill property held a regularly scheduled meeting on November 12
Among the items discussed were the details regarding the abandonment of the existing well setup at the landfill site in Grand River, located in western Decatur County.
An abandoned well is one that the facility is no longer using or has fallen into such a state of disrepair that it is no longer practical to continue its use.
Plugging of abandoned wells is a standard procedure by which sealing up the well helps to prevent contaminating the critical ground water in the fill site location.
These actions are a key component of compliance with the Iowa Groundwater Protection Act of 1987. This legislation was enacted to help regulate the landfill industry as a means to prevent harmful contamination resulting from old or outdated systems and equipment.
As a part of the new cell construction at the landfill site, board members determined that it would be a good time to expand the water input systems tied to the expansion of the site that will enable the location to continue operations for the next two decades.
Construction crews have been busy expanding the new plats into a modern and sophisticated waste handling facility while at the same time as handling the thirty eight tons of solid waste each day.
Other items on the agenda revolved around the formal updating of the status of an employee (Dave Pearce) at the landfill site as a “regular part time” employee in accordance with board bylaws.
House keeping items included approval of upcoming holiday hours at the site as well as Saturday closings. Board financial s were approved prior to the adjournment of the meeting.
