Raiderettes play two at Murray Tournament

MURRAY, Iowa — The Raiderette softball team traveled to Murray on Saturday to play in the 46th annual Murray softball tournament. Mount Ayr played in two games, winning one. The victory set Mount Ayr’s record at 4-3 through seven games. The Raideretttes beat East Union 6-0 and lost to Murray 6-2.
Mount Ayr hosted Murray on Monday and state ranked Martensdale-St. Mary’s on Tuesday (results were not available as of press time). The rest of the week sees SW Valley come to town on June 11 and sees Mount Ayr traveling to Wayne on Friday.
The game with East Union last Saturday was the second between the teams so far this year. Previously, Mount Ayr beat East Union 11-1 at Mount Ayr on May 26. This time, the score would be closer, 6-0, but the result was the same. The two teams will get another shot at each other next week.
Mount Ayr out-hit East Union five to four in the game. Five East Union errors were costly with the Raiderettes being able to capitalize. Mount Ayr scored once in the first and twice in the second to build a 3-0 lead after two innings. That score would hold until the top of the fifth when Mount Ayr scored three times to extend its lead to 6-0.
Keely Wasteney was the winning pitcher after five innings of work where she scattered three hits, gave up no runs, walked two and struck out two. Ryley Greenwell pitched an inning of relief.
Mount Ayr had five different players get hits in the game. Emma Reynolds led the Raiderettes going 2-for-2 with a RBI and two walks. Wasteney and Sophia West each had a hit and RBI. Alba Friedrich had the other hit for Mount Ayr.
The Raiderettes only loss at the tournament was a 6-2 defeat to Murray. The host scored first in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Mount Ayr tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third. Mount Ayr’s run came on a RBI single by Kensie Barnes, scoring Alba Friedrich. After Murray took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth, Mount Ayr answered again with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder’s choice by MaKel Jones. Murray would take the game in the seventh, scoring four runs in the top of the inning on two plays, a fielder’s choice and a play with an error.
Murray out-hit Mount Ayr 12 to two in the game. Barnes and Payton Worthington had the Mount Ayr hits. Keely Wasteney had two walks and Worthington, Sophia West, Friedrich and Barnes each reached base via walks. Barnes pitched a complete game over seven innings and struck out three, walked two and gave up six runs on 12 hits.
