MOUNT AYR, Iowa — The first meeting with the top ranked Martensdale-St. Mary’s Blue Devils this season went to the visiting team in an 8-3 loss last week for the Raiders.
The Blue Devils outscored Mount Ayr 7-0 from the second to the fifth innings to build a lead that was too much to overcome. Mount Ayr scored runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings. Despite the difference in run production, the Raiders nearly matched MTSM’s hit total as the Blue Devils only out-hit Mount Ayr 6-5 in the game. The Raiders defense struggled in the game, committing four errors in the contest. The two teams will play again on June 26 at Martensdale-St. Marys.
The loss was the second in three games for Mount Ayr who fell to 5-2 with the loss. MTSM was playing in their 16th game and improved to 14-2. The Raiders had a pair of games wiped out due to weather last week. Their game with Murray was canceled on June 8 and their home game with SW Valley was also lost to weather on June 11. The SW Valley game will be made up as it’s a Pride of Iowa Conference game.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning for a 1-1 tie game. The Blue Devils scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead and pushed two more runs home in the top of the third to extend their lead to 6-1. Single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings gave the Blue Devils an 8-1 lead. Mount Ayr tried to rally late, scoring a run in the sixth and seventh, but it wasn’t enough.
Adler Reed led Mount Ayr batters going 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Jaxsen Walter was also 2-for-3 and Tyler Still had the other hit. Drew Graham and Hayes Stogdill both reached base via walks.
Reed started the game on the mound and took the loss after working three innings. He struck out three, walked four and gave up six runs on four hits. Rowan Sackett and Still also pitched in the game.
