Max Eugene (Ike) McGehee, son of Kenneth and Loueva Shaughnessy McGehee, was born June 12, 1932 in Mount Ayr, Iowa. He passed away at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr on January 2, 2010, after a courageous four-month battle with cancer, at the age of 77 years.
Ike grew up in Mount Ayr and graduated from Mount Ayr high school in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from October 1952 to October 1954. He worked for the Mount Ayr Postal Service, retiring March 30, 1990 after 30 years.
He was married to Mari Rees McGehee on May 4, 1958 at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. To this union two children, Mitzi Jo and Michael James, were born. They were privileged to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2008 at the church.
Ike was a faithful Sunday school attendant, having received a 69-year perfect attendance pin last fall. He was loving and proud of his family. He cherished his friends. He loved children, delighting in teasing them with special nicknames (many of his adult friends also have ‘special’ names given them by Ike). Ike regularly attended his grandchildren’s activities and was honored and humbled when the Creston High School Booster Club named him and his family Fan of the Year. He enjoyed good food, lots of conversation, new cars and the New York Yankees. He was a member of American Legion Post #172 and the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his only brother, Ted, and his grandparents.
Ike is survived by his wife, Mari; daughter, Mitzi Hymbaugh and her children, Matthew, Michael (friend Jessina) and Michelle (Jeff) Hines; his son, Mike McGehee and wife Tracey and their children, Jacob, Ashley and Brooke McGehee; a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Hines; brother-in-law, Bill Rees (Virginia); sister-in-law, Jo Loudon (Bob); cousins including Wayne McGehee (Rosetta), and nephews, nieces and a host of friends.
A memorial fund has been established to the First Christian Church. Arrangements were made by Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
