Payton Weehler sneaks in by the endzone pylon on a designed pass play that broke down into a quarterback keeper Friday night. Weehler scored the first touchdown of the game for the Raiders.
Mount Ayr 28, NV 6
Last Friday night, the Raiders faced a confident Nodaway Valley team in the Battle of the Rock. After scoring 22 points in the first half and keeping Nodaway Valley off the board, things looked up for Mount Ayr. The second half, proved to be an uphill battle as the Raiders saw multiple players cramp on the field. “We got tired. It was a little muggy, even though it was cool, it was muggy. Our guys haven’t really played at this level so far this year,” said co-head coach Derek Lambert. “This seemed like a really long game. That played a part in our injuries, a lot of it was just cramps. We were asking guys to go out there and play that really haven’t played at a varsity level before.”
The Raider defense held strong, allowing only one touchdown in the second half. Isaac Grose was a big part of the defense, recording three sacks. “We knew they were going to come out and pass a lot,” said Grose. “The defense kind of had a chip on our shoulder because they said they were going to pass all over us so we had to come out and play well. Our pass coverage has been good. We have a lot of returning players bringing experience so that has been good.”
Despite little production in the second half, the first half was all about the Raider offense. Payton Weehler led the offense to three touchdowns and a two-point conversion, scoring a rushing touchdownz to kick things off and finding a couple through the air on passes to Frost and Swank.
The Raiders will travel to Truro for the first of five road games this Friday night.
