Mount Ayr 3, I35 0
Friday night, the Raiders traveled to Truro for a battle against the Interstate 35 Roadrunners.
The Raiders have had a small rivalry with the Roadrunners, not having defeated them since 2008.
The teams stayed between the 30 yard line throughout the night as the defenses held the offenses and penalties plagued both teams, with 14 total. The Raiders were penalized six times for 58 yards, while their opponent saw eight flags for 91 yards.
At halftime, the game stood scoreless and would for the next 23 minutes and 58 seconds.
With only seconds remaining, the Raiders had the ball and marched down the field with big passes from Payton Weehler to Dawson Frost and runs from Keelan and Kolben Klommhaus and Reas Knapp.
Kolben Klommhaus got his number called with 12 seconds left on the clock. Running to the 12, he went down with two seconds remaining and Mount Ayr called timeout.
Peyton Stull and the field goal unit took the field.
Stull had never kicked a field goal (other than a PAT) at the varsity level.
From 29 yards, the ball was kicked and was drilled down the center with plenty of distance to spare.
The team rallied around Stull, who had just done “the impossible”. He had allowed the Raiders to defeat Interstate 35 for the firts time in almost 12 years.
“They told me to get my leg ready and I just got it ready,” said Stull after the game. “We had practiced a lot of PATs and kickoffs before the game, but the credit goes to the team for getting us to that point.”
Coach Delwyn Showlater was elated after the game.
“Pretty cool customer for a sophomore,” said coach Showalter about Peyton Stull. “We put that team in last night. We took that time out and said everyone take a deep breath, worst case scenario we go into overtime, but he drilled that thing.”
The Raiders move to 2-0 on the year and will be back at home to host the Central Decatur Cardinals Friday night at 7 p.m.
