Mt. Ayr 35, Clarinda 3
The Raiders traveled to Clarinda Friday night, on what was the Cardinals homecoming.
The Raiders spoiled the night with a 35-3 victory, shutting out the Cardinals for the last three quarters of the game, allowing the field goal late in the first.
“I am really pleased what we did tonight, but more pleased with what we did throughout the week,” said coach Delwyn Showalter. “There were some areas that we struggled with them. They are big, their footwork is good for big guys.”
Mount Ayr found their balance of ground and air against Clarinda, completing 12-of-18 passes with Payton Weehler for 252 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
On the ground, Weehler stayed busy as well, rushing for 62 yards on 18 carries, while Reas Knapp saw 43 yards on four carries.
While the running game saw 147 yards, the field wasn’t in the best shape to run on, having taken on water from the recent rain in the last week. Guys feet were slipping out from under them and it was difficult to make cuts, however, Dawson Frost was able to take it to the house on a one yard bubble screen and then 87 yards from there for an 88 yard touchdown, juking and stiff arming defenders along the way.
“When I caught it, I saw one guy that I stiff armed and then I blacked out,” said Dawson Frost through laughter. “Then I used whatever was in the tank. I got lucky (with traction) honestly, most of the time I slipped. Open field running was much easier than planting.”
Clarinda struggled to find any ground, mustering 126 total yards compared to Mount Ayr’s 399.
The win puts Mount Ayr at 6-1 on the season before they host Van Meter who currently holds the top spot on the RPI rankings and is the favorite for a state bid this year.
The Raiders will host the Bulldogs this Friday night at 7 p.m.
