Mt. Ayr 39, ACGC 16
Mount Ayr football took a business trip to Guthrie Center last Friday in hopes of a win over the ACGC Chargers.
A win would hopefully keep them in the play for a playoff bid.
ACGC won the toss, but elected to defer until the second half.
The Raiders first drive stalled out before the Chargers marched down the field to go up 8-0.
The Raiders dialed up their game and Payton Weehler found Dawson Frost for 30 yards and touchdown before converting a two-point play to even the score.
The Raider passing attack took off from there, with Payton Weehler throwing 10-for-17 for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Six of those 10 passes found Weehler’s good friend and favorite receiver, Dawson Frost. Frost saw 122 yards and two touchdowns, which book-ended the scores for Mount Ayr.
“Sometimes in practice we bicker a lot, we are both competitive and at the end of the day we want the best for each other,” said Payton Weehler about his and Frosts friendship. “I know if I throw to him no one can guard him and he is going to go get it.
“The more we bicker, the more we figure things out,” said Frost. “We are such close of friends now that we have built up our relationship the last couple of years. Hundreds and hundreds of passes have been thrown and we got some work in this summer before the season started which helped as well.”
The Raiders rushed only 27 times in the winover ACGC, gaining 74 yards and one touchdown. Kolben Klommhaus led the ground attack for Mount Ayr, seeing the ball five times for 40 yards and the one score.
Defensively, the Raiders had their work cut out for them against a team who liked to play in the trenches.
ACGC ran the ball 57 times for 218 yards Their two touchdowns came from Gavin Carnelison in his 26 attempts for 107 yards.
The only lost fumble on the night for ACGC came after the ball carrier was hit hard and the ball squirted into the air. Keelan Klommhaus was able to track it and take it to the house, putting Mount Ayr up 24-8 after the two-point conversion.
When forced to pass, the Chargers were only one-of-seven for 26 yards with two interceptions. Raider backs, Dawson Swank and Trae Ehlen each had an interception.
The win kept Mount Ayr at 12th on the RPI rankings which put them into the playoffs for the 17th time in school history.
It was later announced the Mount Ayr will travel to Lake City, some two and a half hours away, to play South Central Calhoun at 7 p.m. on Friday.
