SCC 56, Mount Ayr 22
The Raiders season came to an end Friday night after a tough loss to a South Central Calhoun team in Lake City.
For the first time this year, however, the Titans of South Central Calhoun went into the second quarter trailing.
Mount Ayr led 14-9, but by halftime, the Raiders were trailing 30-14. The Raiders came out in the second half and cut the deficit to 30-22, but the Titans offense fought in the trenches to a 56-22 victory, outscoring the Raiders 26-8 in the second half after Mount Ayr tried to catch up, looking to convert on key fourth downs deep in their own territory, but failed.
The Raiders amassed 331 yards in the loss, while the Titans saw 381 yards total.
The Mount Ayr offense looked slightly different against South Central Calhoun, throwing for 317 yards. Payton Weehler was 14-of-31 with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
“I thought we came up here and showed them what Raider football is all about and I know they haven’t seen anything like that before,” said Weehler. “I was really glad how we came out and played.”
Weehler’s go-to receiver, Dawson Frost, had five catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns.
“These are my brothers out here and I’d do anything for them,” said Frost. “I just want to give them my all no matter what. All the off-season lifting, puking, things that suck it just pays off for moments like these.”
Weehler reflected on losing Frost next season to graduation. “It means a lot [to lose Frost] he’s my brother and it’s a sad deal,” said Weehler. “I know I have another chance next year and I’m just looking forward to putting in a lot of work with the younger guys and getting them where they need to be. I’m excited and ready to be back out there.”
Isaac Grose, also, had a strong performance with three receptions for 45 yards in his last appearance in a Raider football uniform.
“It’s just incredible. I never thought this day would come, it’s just something you don’t think of and when it happens emotions just start coming,” said Grose. “Through the game, first half we were with them first quarter and we made two errors. Other than that we beat ourselves tonight and that’s the only reason the score was like that.”
The Raider rushing attack was limited, with only 19 attempts for 14 total yards.
On defense, the Raiders gave up 361 yards on 70 rushing attempts, while the Titans only completed two passes in six attempts. The Raiders intercepted two passes, including a beautiful one-handed interception by Dawson Frost. Dawson Swank had the other interception on a diving attempt.
Keelan Klommhaus stayed busy for the Raider defense with eight solo tackles and five assists, while Reas Knapp had six solo tackles and nine assists.
The Raiders saw a blocked punt by Kolben Klommhaus taken to the house by Cody Larson, and also a blocked field goal attempt by Reas Knapp.
“We did some nice things. We knew stopping them was going to be a problem, but we thought they were going to have a difficult time with our passing game. We made some great throws and great catches in the conditions out there,” said coach Delwyn Showalter. “We hurt ourselves with field position. We just didn’t handle a couple of punts real well, kickoff situations, we had a long field all the time. That turnover before halftime was a killer. It sucked a lot of wind out of our sails and made a pretty tall task after that.
“I thought our guys battled and fought so hard together. We’ve got a bunch of hard working guys and tonight was a great example of that.”
The Raiders end the season 7-3 and will graduate 11 seniors. Season stats will appear in next weeks Record-News.
