M. GRIMES
Thelma M. Grimes, daughter of Homer and Minnie (Tapp) Ibbotson, was born November 18, 1917 on a farm north of Shannon City, IA. Thelma was blessed with a brother, Loren and when she was four years old, Roger Harris came to live with the family, and he became a foster brother to her.
Thelma attended school at Shannon City Consolidated Schools and graduated in 1935. In 1937, Thelma moved to Tingley and kept house for the Tapp Brothers.
On October 2, 1943, Thelma married Lester (Curly) Grimes in Indianola, IA. They returned back to Shannon City where Lester re-opened the Grimes Produce Station, which was closed while he served in World War II. To this union three children were born: Mary Lynn, Eileen and Charles.
Thelma helped at the Produce Station. In 1966, due to Lester’s health, they moved to Mount Ayr. She managed The Twin Shop for a year and then was the Ringgold County Deputy Auditor for nine years.
Thelma passed away at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr on January 2, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester in 1989; brothers, Loren (wife Marjorie) Ibbotson and Roger Harris; grandchildren, Jenifer and Bradley Jobe; one great grandchild, Patrick Kelly; father and mother-in-law, Charles and Bernice Grimes; three brothers-in-law, William (wife Louise) Grimes, Charles T. (wife, Virginia) Grimes, Robert (wife, Trudy) Grimes.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Lynn (husband, Jerry) Jobe, their daughters, Dana (husband, Mike) Kelly and their daughter, Bridget, Erin (husband, Gene) Carbonara and their children, Katie and Will; daughter, Eileen McGrath; son, Charles (wife, Eva) Grimes and their children, Nicole (husband, Sam) Garden and their children, Noah, George, CeCi, Charlie (wife, Kellee) and their children, Cal, children, Cal, Shep, Jacob (wife, Erin), Colin (wife, Abby); other relatives and friends. Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr is in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.armstrongfh.com.
Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at the United Baptist Presbyterian Church in Mount Ayr, IA.
Officiating and eulogies by Pastor Mike Maddy, Mary Lynn Jobe and Charles Grimes.     Musicians were Faye Howie and Elsie Schafer.
Songs were “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross”.
Casketbearers were Sam Garden, Colin Grimes, Jacob Grimes, Charlie Grimes, Gene Carbonara, Mike Kelly and Alan Ibbotson.
Honorary casketbearers were Jerry Jobe, David James, Debbie (Grimes) Berliner, Paul Burell,  Cindy (Grimes) Miles and Bob Burell.
Burial was at the Tingley Cemetery in Tingley, IA.
