VM 48, MA 43
The Raiders fell to the Van Meter Bulldogs last Tuesday night for the second loss of the season.
The Raiders fell behind early, 17-7, but battled back through the second and third quarters, and at one point, taking the lead, but the Bulldogs held strong to keep the lead and win by five.
“I thought it was good on the defensive end, where tonight it was more about getting stops,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “Our defense has to be what we sell ourselves on. Our practice was spirited, very serious, there was some joking a little bit, but they were determined to come back and do this.”
Payton Weehler led the Raider scoring attack with 11 points, followed by Cayden Lambert with 10.
The Raiders fell to 12-2 on the season with the loss, while the Bulldogs remained undefeated.
“We knew these two games would be the hardest part of our schedule,” said Ruggles. “For us to come through here, to show some improvement, our goal was to win the west and maybe the POI, let’s wrap up the west and get cleaned up and get ready for the tournament.”

Mt. Ayr 78, East Union 32
The Raiders found themselves back in the win column after East Union came to town Friday night.
The Raiders came out hot, leading 34-7 before the Eagles put up 18 points in the second to close the gap.
The Raiders stayed consistent throughout the second half, scoring 12 points in both the third and fourth to close the game with a win and improve to 13-2 on the season before seeing Clarinda Monday night.
Against, the Eagles, Dawson Frost scored 24 points to lead the Raiders, while also seeing the free throw line plenty, hitting seven-of-10.
Jaixen Frost had the second most on the team with 17 points, sinking three-of-four from outside the arc and also snagging five defensive rebounds.
“I thought we shot the ball really well at the start,” said coach Ruggles. “We went six-for-six to start the game off with five threes, that’s 18 points pretty darn quick. We did a really nice job getting the ball out ahead of the defense.”
The Raiders improved to 12-2 on the season.

Mt. Ayr 59, Clarinda 53
Monday night, the Raiders traveled to Clarinda to face a tough Cardinal team. Despite an 8-9 record, the Cardinals have faced some daunting opponents and came out tough against the Raiders.
Mount Ayr tripped early against Clarinda, using a timeout early to calm the team down.
“Sooner or later we need to have a sense of ugency to what we do,” said coach Ruggles. “Sometimes we just ho-hum throughout the first quarter. We have to be able to start a ballgame with scoring and have some toughness.”
The Raiders gave up multiple trips to the line and trailing 13-6 by the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second, Mount Ayr used another timeout to get things straightened out as the Raiders were now down 20-8.
Coming out of the timeout, the Raiders battled back to trail by one at halftime.
Mount Ayr would take its first lead of the game to start the second half and they would continue to roll with it through the night.
By the time it was said and done, Payton Weehler led the Raiders with 16 points on the night followed by Dawson and Jaixen Frost with 12 each. Isaac Grose rounded out the double digit scoring with 10.
Dawson Frost led the rebounds with 11, all defensive as well as the lone block.
On Tuesday, the Raiders faced Nodaway Valley, but results were not available in time for press.
