Della Delores Haugland, age 85, of Mount Ayr, IA, went home peacefully to meet her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 26, 2020.
Della was born Della Delores Claude May 21, 1934 in West Bend, IA, to Gene and Mary Claude. Della graduated West Bend High School in 1952 and then went on to marry the love of her life, Gene Haugland, on October 31, 1955.
After their marriage Gene and Della lived in Montana while Gene served in the US Air Force. After Gene’s military discharge they purchased their first grocery store in Lakefield, MN. They later moved to Sherburn, MN, owning Gene’s Super Valu until their retirement in 1985.
After retiring from the grocery store Gene and Della made their new home in Mesa, AZ. Even after Gene passed away in 2014, Della stayed in Mesa until March of 2019 when she moved to Mount Ayr, IA where she lived until her passing.
Della was an avid golfer, loved her bingo and penny slots, card playing cronies (as she called her friends), selling/renting the homes in her park, member of different auxiliary’s and a member of the United Methodist Church.
Della is survived by her children; Jeff Haugland (Cindy) of Mount Ayr, IA, Gail Roben (Partner Tony Thompson) of Houston, TX and Marlyn Haugland (Michele) of Bixby, OK; her sister, Marilyn Wickman of Emmetsburg, IA and many extended relatives. She was blessed to have six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Della was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Haugland; parents, Gene and Mary Claude; sisters, Marjorie Claude and Opal Dillion; and brothers, Donnie Claude and Kenneth Claude.
A summer memorial is planned so both Gene and Della’s ashes may be laid to rest together at the West Bend Cemetery, West Bend, IA.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations in Della’s name to made to EveryStep Hospice in Mount Ayr, IA.
