Kolben Klommhaus beats the throw to third as he dives head-first into third in a cloud of infield against Nodaway Valley Monday night.
A busy week saw the Raiders go 4-1 to improve to 6-1 on the season after games against Stanton, Earlham, Southwest Valley, Martensdale-St. Mary’s and Nodaway Valley.
Mt. Ayr 14, Stanton 1
The Raider bats got off to a hot start Tuesday, June 23 in Stanton, scoring four runs and allowing the Vikings to score one to go into the second inning up 4-1.
The Raiders didn’t slow down as the next three innings saw 10 runs for Mount Ayr and none for the Stanton Vikings.
Freshman Jaixen Frost saw two doubles, two RBI and two runs off of three hits for the Raiders while Kolben Klommhaus had two runs, two RBI, one double and one single to round off his night.
As a team the Raiders saw 14 runs on nine hits and 10 RBI, along with 12 walks.
Briar Knapp started on the mound for the Raiders, pitching four innings and striking out eight batters with a 1.75 ERA.
Jaydon Knight came in to close out the game on the mound, walking one and striking out two in his lone inning pitched.
Behind the mound, the Raiders saw 15 put outs on 20 chances and one error.
The Viking bats had one run off two hits.

“We hit the ball ball hard in some spots and obviously they had some errors that gave us a lot of extra runs and we were able to take advantage of that,” said coach Chris Elwood. “Briar Knapp did what he was supposed to do, came in and gave up one run, threw well and Jaydon (Knight) came in and finished up for us and again, pitching is our strength and it showed tonight.”

Mt. Ayr 11, Earlham 1
The 11-1 score doesn’t tell the entire story of the match-up between the Raiders and Cardinals June 24.
Mount Ayr held a 5-1 lead heading into the fourth before the Mount Ayr hitters found their stride and put the game away on a six run top of the fifth.
The Raiders saw 11 runs on 11 hits, all singles, while knocking in nine runners.
Jaixen Frost showed up again for the Raiders with three hits, three runs and two stolen bases, while Erik Trujillo saw two hits, one run and four RBI.
On the mound for Mount Ayr was Jace Grose. He allowed three hits and one run and struck out six batters to grab the win.
Behind Grose, the Raiders committed three errors, but saw 15 put outs on 23 chances.
Earlham saw four hits with one run off an RBI.
On the mound, the Cardinals pitched Alex Caskey to start. Caskey received the loss after four innings pitched, five runs on six hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
Brody Morrison and Kallin Nicholson came in to help Caskey allowing six runs off three hits combined.
In the field the Cardinals saw six put outs on eight chances and two errors.
“Jace did an excellent job and I know he’s been waiting for his opportunity,” said coach Elwood. “With a slow going season he has had to wait until the fourth game but he showed he belongs in the rotations just as much as anybody else. Earlham had some good bats in the lineup and he kept them off balance and threw strikes.”

The Raiders hosted the Timberwolves in what would be their second game this season, in which Mount Ayr was able to come out on top in both.
Previously, the Raiders bested the Timberwolves 11-1, however, Southwest Valley allowed only five runs in this narrow defeat.
The Raider offense saw some spark when Isaac Grose hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first.
“It was nice to get that three run cushion right off the bat,” said coach Elwood. “After that we scored one run in the next four innings and one more in the sixth so we could close it in the seventh. I want to give a lot of respect to Southwest Valley. We had the same two guys pitch the first game and there was 11 strikeouts and they only had one hit. This time they definitely put the ball in play a lot more and looked much better at the plate.”
Leading the Raider offense was Jaixen Frost with two hits, one run, one RBI and a double, though Isaac Grose had one hit, and three RBI with the home run to begin the game.
Mount Ayr saw five runs on six hits and five RBI.
On the mound, Jaixen Frost picked up the win after pitching 5.1 innings and striking out seven while allowing two runs on three hits.
Dawson Swank came in to close the contest in 1.2 innings, striking out one in 13 pitches.
The fielders committed two errors and had 21 put outs in 30 chances.
The Timberwolves had two runs on five hits and two RBI at the plate.
Brendan Pearson pitched for Southwest Valley, striking out two while allowing five runs on six hits, four of which were earned.
Behind the mound the fielders committed three errors and put out 17 on 26 chances.
