Mt. Ayr 3, CD 1
The Raiders hosted Central Decatur on July 3 in a game that went all seven innings and saw a total of four runs scored.
Mount Ayr would win 3-1, with all three runs coming off the bat of Austin Greenland.
The senior right-fielder came into the contest one-for-11 at the plate.
In most scenarios, Greenland has a designated hitter in the lineup for him, but tonight he got his moment and made the best of it.
Greenland saw the plate twice and knocked two homers out-of-the-park. The first home-run was a solo, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals tied the game in the top of the fifth. Greenland was up to bat once more in the bottom of the fifth with Erik Trujillo on base.
Another big hit gave Greenland home-run number two of his career and drove in Trujillo, giving Mount Ayr the 3-1 lead that would become the final of the night.
“Baseball is a funny game, before tonight’s game, Austin only had one hit and he hit two, barrelled them up and hammered both of them. I feel great for him, he’s had a tough season at the plate so great for him and very pleased to get the win.”
As a team, the Raiders saw six hits at the plate.
On the mound, Jaydon Knight started, pitching four innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out six batters.
Dawson Swank came in as relief to throw three innings and strikingout one.
In the field, the Raiders had 21 putouts on 27 chances and had no errors.
The Cardinals pitched Michel Evertsen who allowed three runs on six hits and struckout three.
Behind the mound, the Cardinals kept it clean with no errors and 18 putouts on 28 total chances.
At bat, Central Decatur mustered three hits, all singles, along with one RBI and three walks.
“Jaydon Knight started and threw exceptionally well. We knew we were going to take him 70-75 pitches and then we brought Dawson Swank in” said coach Elwood. “We’ve really liked our depth at pitching, but when you’ve only played 10 games it’s hard to get everybody the innings that they need.”

Mt. Ayr 19, Bedford 9
The Raiders hosted the Bedford Bulldogs last Tuesday, June 30 in a contest that went six innings.
The Raiders defeated the Bulldogs 19-9 in a contest that was neck-and-neck until the fifth.
After four innings, the Raiders and Bulldogs were tied at five runs apiece.
Bedford went up two in the top of the fifth, but the Raiders saw seven runs to take a five run lead.
The sixth inning saw two more runs by the Bulldogs and once again, seven more by Mount Ayr to end the game after six.
Leading the Raider bats was Kolben Klommhaus. He had five hits, three runs and four RBI with one stolen base.
Jace Grose started the night on the mound, in his first career varsity start.
Grose pitched 5.2 innings and allowed nine runs on 10 hits and struckout six.
Dawson Swank came in for short relief, throwing only two pitches and seeing one batter.
Behind the mound, the Raiders had 18 putouts on 31 total chances and saw four errors on the night.
The Bulldogs recorded nine runs on 11 hits and had nine RBI.
The mound saw plenty of rotation after starter Brennan Sefrit was pulled after the second inning. Sefrit threw 43 pitches against 11 batters and allowed two runs on two hits and struckout three.
Tanner Snethen saw two innings and allowed nine runs, eight of which were earned, on four hits and struck out one.
Tristen Cummings pitched 1.1 innings, allowing eight runs on four hits, while walking four and Shay Purdy saw seven pitches against two batters, allowing two hits.
The Bulldogs struggled in the field with 16 putouts on 26 chances and committing seven errors.
“I think we were fortunate that they did pull Sefrit,” said coach Chris Elwood. “The way that we played defense was not good. Jace threw well, he deserved better defense. Bottom line is we have to play better, we were lucky to get that victory.”
