Mt. Ayr 11, CD 6
The Raiders defeated the Central Decatur Cardinals, 11-6, last Saturday in Leon.
The contest was close, with Mount Ayr trailing the Cardinals 4-2 after two innings, but another two in the third tied things up for Mount Ayr.
All ngiht, the Cardinals pitched around freshman Jaixen Frost, which has become normal for the standout who is currently hitting .622 with six doubles, four homers and 21 RBI.
With bases loaded and Frost up to bat, it looked as if the Cardinals were going to pitch around Frost once more, giving Mount Ayr a one run lead with a walk, but the ball crossed over enough of the plate that Frost saw something he liked. A swing all of Mount Ayr would like. Frost drove the ball home for a grand slam that would give Mount Ayr a four run cushion and momentum for the rest of the contest.
“He had been up once earlier in the game and they pitched around him and I figured they would do it again,” said coach Elwood. “He took care of it. Jaixen is an exceptional hitter, thats all there is to it.”
Central Decatur would score two more in the bottom of the fifth, but a three run sixth inning would secure the win for the Raiders as they advance to the district final.
The Raiders saw eight hits and 11 RBI with two home-runs on the night, both homers off the bat of Frost.
On the mound, the Raiders started Jace Grose. Grose pitched one inning, allowing three hits, four runs and struck out two.
Jaydon Knight finished his night with three innings, allowing five hits and striking out four.
A quick change at the mound brought in Isaac Grose, who was told he would be on a short leash. Grose threw 11 pitches resulting in two walks, prompting yet another change for the Raiders.
Dawson Swank came in for 47 pitches, allowing two hits and four strikeouts.
Behind the mound, the Raiders committed two errors and recorded 21 putouts on 26 total chances.
“Overall, I’m very excited about the win, CD is a solid team to get two wins against them,” said coach Elwood.
The Cardinals saw six runs on 10 hits and three RBI.
In the field, Central Decatur had two errors, 21 putouts and 32 total chances.
On the mound, Evertsen threw for three innings allowing three runs on two hits and two strikeouts.
David Walker came in for four runs on three hits and no strikeouts, following by Tate Hill as the closer. Hill allowed four runs on two hits.
The victory brought the Raiders to the district final which was played Tuesday night against Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
The game will appear in next week’s edition of the Record-News.
