Pville 13, Mt. Ayr 7
The Raiders traveled to Pleasantville to face the Trojans for the first time in three years.
Wet conditions made for a slippery playing field and ball, causing both teams to focus on their run game up the middle.
“Tonight was a rough one”, said coach Derek Lambert. “We did not execute very well, but when we did we had some nice plays. Anything on the perimeter was a challenge, especially for us offensively. It’s hard to block someone in space when you don’t have good footing.”
After back-and-forth play down the middle of the field the teams went into halftime scoreless, however, not for lack of trying. Both teams came close, with Mount Ayr sitting in the redzone before attempting to convert on fourth and goal.
Pleasantville received the ball to begin the second half, starting on the 31 yard line after a squib took a few hops. The Trojans scored on a 44-yard run by Isaac Mann, who broke through the Raider defense for a big scoring run.
The Raiders started their first second-half drive on the 41. A few passes from Payton Weehler to Trae Ehlen put them into deep into Trojan territory. Weehler would take it in after a series of quarterback keeper plays to tie the Trojans at seven.
The third quarter closed with the Trojans sitting at the Raider three yard-line. The first play to open the fourth gave Pleasantville six more. The point after was blocked by Mount Ayr’s Donovan Morales, to put the Raiders down 13-7.
Penalties would plague the Raiders throughout the night along with an interception on fourth and seven.
Pleasantville wouldn’t score again, while the Raiders had one last shot. With 15 seconds left, a pass interference call gave the Raiders the ball at the Trojan 45 yard-line. The ensuing pass was batted down as time expi expired, giving Mount Ayr its first loss of the season.
“We plan on watching film to clean things up, but this is the third week in a row where we had both of their films and they didn’t show this defense once in either of their films,” said coach Lambert. “We’ve come to expect that. Teams have to make changes to try and stop us offensively and they did that, kudos to them.”
