The Raiders were short on players Friday night, as multiple starters were not able to be with the team.
“I think this is the least amount of guys I have ever suited up,” said coach Derek Lambert. “They did a tremendous job. Those guys knew they were going to be on the field all night.”
The Raiders were forced to start underclassman who had not had much experience, except at the end of a contest when they were well ahead.
Pella Christian came into the contest with a record of 2-2, fresh off a win against Interstate-35, the team Mount Ayr plays this Friday, October 2.
A testament to the coaching and atheletic ability in Mount Ayr, the young Raider front offensive front stood its ground, gaining a total of 256 yards on offense.
The first quarter was a battleground, going back-and-forth before the Raiders struck first off an Adler Shay five-yard run after a high snap by the Eagles ended in a Raider fumble recovery, deep in Mount Ayr territory.
Pella Chrstian was given an opportunity in the second quarter, after Jaixen Frost was picked off at his own 31.
Pella Christian was relying heavily on runningback Cody Boender, however, on an attempt to move the chains, the Eagles took to the air.
Raider defensive back Erik Trujillo was able to intercept the Eagle pass and return it inside the 10.
Jaydon Knight took it in the rest of the way, giving Mount Ayr the lead at halftime, leading 14-0 and leaving the Pella Christian Eagles searching for answers.
The Eagles scored their only touchdown after a rough start by the Raiders.
The second half kick took a bounce out-of-bounds, putting the ball at the Eagle 35. The drive stalled at the 11 and the Eagles went for the conversion.
A defensive holding call on the play moved the ball inside the five for a first down.
Cody Boender took the ball in for a touchdown.
The Raiders would go on to score two more off the legs of Jaixen Frost and Adler Shay, to stun the Eagles 28-7, keeping them off the board for the remainder of the contest with a stout defense led by Erik Trujillo.
Trujillo had the interception that lead to a score, as well as many key third down pass breakups resulting in punts.
“I knew we needed to get the ball back and he put it up in the air so I decided to pick it off and see how far I could take it,” said Erik Trujillo. “We had to turn the page, work as a team and move forward. It means a lot [to get the win]. It’s big.”
Coach Lambert was impressed by his senior defensive backs effort throughout the night.
“It means a lot to the younger kids to see someone like Erik who didn’t get a lot of time on the field as a junior but put in a tremendous amount of time in the offseason,” said coach Lambert. “In our offseason we had speed and agility camps and Erik was at every one of them and as a senior it has paid off.”
The Raiders will head to Truro on Friday to face the Interstate-35 Roadrunners at 7 p.m.
