The Clarke Indians came to Mount Ayr to face the Raiders in the first contest of the season for both teams.
The Raiders did see early action in Central Decatur during the jamboree, however, a half of basketball against Ankeny Christian Academy did not show coach Bret Ruggles the production he knew this team was capable of.
“Two weeks ago I think I lost my mind a couple of times due to our lack of production,” said coach Ruggles. “We just weren’t producing like I thought we could and tonight we did.”
The Raiders also had a different look, with University of Nebraska commit, Payton Weehler, sidelined with a foot injury that had him in a walking boot.
“You were horrified by it,” said coach Ruggles on learning of Weehler’s injury. “He’s a senior, he’s started, I think, 60 games and he started when he was a freshman and he’s been in it ever since. His leadership is great and there’s some things he does on the court that we missed. We passed it around a lot tonight and we would have went in and got that thing and put it away. I need him back on the floor as soon as possible, but we have to get this heel fixed and hopefully soon it will be feeling better.”
Production was not sidelined for Mount Ayr in their opening night as Jaixen Frost battled his way to a team leading 32 points and Riley Maudlin was good for a couple of threes to open the night.
“Frost had a great 32 tonight. It didn’t feel like he was dominating the night, but he was constantly in the scoring mode,” said coach Ruggles. “Erik Trujillo played fantastic tonight, maybe not scoring, but I bet he had tipped close to 40 or 50 balls. I’m so proud of this team. We have had a lack of production and tonight we found it.”
The Raiders have a short turnaround as they host Panorama on Tuesday.
“I’ve never had a team press for 32 minutes and play defense the way we had to play to win a game and then have to do it again tomorrow,” said coach Ruggles. “We are getting ready for Friday. That’s our big day.”
The Raiders travel to Southwest Valley on December 4.
“If we play hard and keep our effort up then we will be fine,” said Ruggles.
The results of which will be in the December 11 issue of the Record-News.
