Mt. Ayr 29, Clarke 26
Monday night marked the second outing for the Raiderettes in a contest that was slow to start against the Clarke Indians.
In what was their 13th meeting in school history, the superstition of the number 13 may have come into play for both teams as the game tipped-off.
Neither team could find a rhythm and saw many shots miss the mark by an uncharacteristic amount.
By the end of the first half, the Raiderettes were leading the Indians 14-13 and were shooting 17 percent from the field.
After halftime, Raiderette coach Thad Streit was looking for the warm-up balls, only to discover the basketballs they had been using the first half were boys basketballs.
Boys basketball uses a ball that is 29.5 inches in circumference and weighing in at 22 ounces.
A girls basketball is a full inch smaller and two ounces lighter.
The second-half saw the girls on both teams over-compensating for the ball they were now playing with.
“We shot five-of-29 the first half and after finding out we played with a boys ball, no wonder we shot 17 percent,” said coach Streit. “Not to make excuses, but dang it. It was ugly, but what was impressive was when the game was on the line, our guts showed up.”
The Raiderettes were able to get it done, however, defeating the Indians 29-26 after a tumultuous contest.
“I am super proud of the girls for having grit down the stretch to pull this game out and get a nail biter at the end,” said coach Streit. “We got some big stops and buckets and we had a reality check down there. We played hard, we got some injuries, the girls played so hard and everyone did their job. We don’t say ‘I’, we say ‘We’.”
The Raiderettes will have a quick turnaround, however, with the Raiderettes hosting Panorama Tuesday night. Results of which will be in the December 11 edition of the Record-News.
“This is their first game,” said coach Streit. “We have two under our belt and we are going to have a short practice and get things straightened out.”

Mt. Ayr 58, Lamoni 37
The Raiderettes saw their first action of the season last week on the hardwood, hosting the Lamoni Demons.
In it’s first contest without last years senior duo of Sam Stewart and Jaycee Knight, Mount Ayr showed a new look with an aggressive, speedy team that was led by Maddie Stewart who came away with 17 points on the night.
The game started off slow. Mount Ayr led Lamoni 9-5 after the first quarter, but the Raiderettes shook off the nerves and led the Demons 30-17 at the half.
The Raiderettes struggled to get some shots in the bucket throughout the night, hitting only 37.3 percent of their shots from the field and only three-of-21 from outside the arc.
“We wanted to try and speed the game up,” said coach Thad Streit. “You have to understand that it’s the first game, but we didn’t do the things we practiced in our press and on our offense that I wanted to do, but we did do some good things.”
Mount Ayr did well under the net, snagging 42 rebounds in total, 20 on offense and 22 on defense.
The Demons didn’t have an answer for Mount Ayr senior, Rachael Sobotka, who snagged nine rebounds in total and 11 points, while Halsie Barnes and Stewart had seven each.
The speed from the Raiderettes was shown by MaKayla Jones who was all over the court as she led the team in steals with four, while also seeing four rebounds and three assists, while also scoring nine points.
Channler Henle also saw double digit points on the night, scoring 10.
“We’ve got things to work on, we’ve got to get in shape,” said coach Streit. “A coach always finds the negative over the positive. I thought we were patient on offense, I thought we posted up well and we played hard. We played fast and that is just going to keep getting better.”
