Mt. Ayr 52, Wayne 37
The Raiders improved to 5-1 after defeating the Wayne Falcons last week, 52-37.
The game was close in the first half, with Mount Ayr leading 22-20 heading into halftime.
The Raiders were without their leading scorer in Jaixen Frost, which seemed to slow the guys down until the second half, outscoring the Falcons 30-17 to take the win.
The Raiders relied on Nebraska University comitt Payton Weehler and senior Erik Trujillo.
Weehler led the scoring with 26 points, whereas Trujillo scored 13.
“We knew we were going to be short-handed coming in,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “But in saying that, Weehler and Trujillo had an outstanding night.”
Ruggles was very impressed with Trujillo’s defense.
“I know he only had 12 points, but his defense is huge,” said Ruggles. “There are huge things he does that doesn’t really get spotlighted.”
Freshman Ryce Reynolds saw more action on the floor in recent games as well.
Against Wayne, Reynolds recorded two points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal.
“Ryce Reynolds, being a freshman, owned the moment and played well,” said Ruggles.
The physical contest saw the Raiders take second place in the Pride of Iowa with a 4-0 conference standing.
