Mt. Ayr 85, SW 53
The Raiders traveled to Seymour Monday night in the first contest of 2021 to help shake-off some rust from winter break.
In what was thought to be an easier win against a Seymour team with only eight players, the Warriors put up a fight with Carter Houser leading the way with 26 points in the contest.
Mount Ayr led the Warriors 22-11 after one quarter but the two teams went even in the second, putting up 19 each to make it an 11 points game at halftime.
“I thought defensively our effort was very subpar,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “Especially in the press. The top part of our press is good, it’s the second and third level we are getting confused on who we are guarding.”
The Raiders came out of halftime and made the adjustments needed to outscore the Warriors 28-7.
“We cleaned it up at halftime and had a little discussion with them and went 28-7 in the third which we should have done in the first quarter.”
Seymour held things tight once again in the fourth, matching the Raiders 16 points.
Sophmore standout Jaixen Frost had himself a game, scoring 38 points total which tied the Mount Ayr school record for points in a game.
The record was set in the 2005-2006 season by Lance Brown against Clarinda Academy.
Frost is always looking to get better in every facet of the games he plays and is chasing his cousin Dawson Frost who was a standout athlete for the Raiders and the school scoring record was a step in the right direction for Jaixen.
“It means everything, honestly. Just trying to follow in Dawson’s footsteps I have to be better than that guy.” Jaixen said with a laugh. “I knew Lance had the record and he’s been chirping in my ear asking if I was going to get it. Now I can tell him, guess what, I got it now.”
Along with Frosts 38 points, the Raiders saw Erik Trujillo with 10 and Payton Weehler with 10 as well to help the Raiders.
Frost led the team in assists with seven and also five steals on the night and was four-of-five from the line, as well as being good from four-of-seven three’s.
The win improved the Raiders to 6-2 on the season as they prepared for Nodaway Valley on Tuesday night.
Results from Tuesday nights contest against Nodaway Valley will appear in the January 14 edition of the Record-News.
