Mt. Ayr 65, NV 53
Mount Ayr hosted the Nodaway Valley Wolverines Tuesday, January 5.
The Raiders came out hot, scoring 18 in the first quarter while only allowing seven.
The Wolverines were able to stick with the Raiders throughout the rest of the contest, however, only outscoring Mount Ayr once in the third quarter, 13-11.
Mount Ayr went on to win 65-53, led by Jaixen Frost with 28 points, while Payton Weehler contributed 12 and Erik Trujillo scored nine.
Defensively, Frost stole four and had one block and snagged five rebounds, while Cody Larson also had five rebounds and two steals.
“I thought our defense was outstanding tonight, it has to be,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “You play Nodaway Valley, you don’t have to be perfect, but you have to be very good, which we were tonight.”
The Raiders as a team had 11 steals, two blocks and 28 defensive rebounds, while Nodaway Valley saw only five offensive rebounds.
“I thought we rebounded extremely well in the second and third quarters,” said Ruggles. “We were a little lackadaisical in the fourth, but we got it by 12.”

Mt. Ayr 46, Bedford 32
The Raiders traveled to our neighbors to the west in Bedford to close out the week last Friday.
The contest was a defensive battle, seeing 13 points total scored in the first quarter, with Mount Ayr leading the Bulldogs, 8-5.
The second quarter was much of the same, as both teams scored 11 to head into halftime with Mount Ayr holding the lead 19-16.
In the second half, Mount Ayr was able to hold its lead, outscoring Bedford 27-16.
The Raiders improved to 8-2, while dropping Bedford to 3-7 after the 46-32 win.
Leading the team was Jaixen Frost with 23 points, while Erik Trujillo scored 11.
Only three other Raiders scored in the contest.
Cody Larson scored six, Rhett Larson scored two and Riley Maudlin had four.
Cody Larson led the team in rebounds with seven, while Payotn Weehler recorded six, along with three steals.
Leading the team in steals was Trujillo with six.
“On film this team is 3-6, but they are so close to turning the corning,” said coach Ruggles. “You can see that they are very close, they are a young team and they remind us of how we were three years ago. They are learning how to win this conference and that takes time in this conference.”
This contest also marked the first contest since Governor Reynolds lifted restrictions on fan attendance.
Bedford allowed eight fans per athlete which showed a packed, loud gym.
“Frank did a great job tonight,” said Ruggles. “They had the right gym with the right atmosphere and they played physical.”
The Raiders hosted Southwest Valley on Tuesday, but the contest was not played before press time.
They host Central Decatur tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m.
