Three points separated the two teams in Mount Ayr Monday night, unfortunately for Mount Ayr, the Central Decatur Cardinals came out on top.
The contest was all defense as the Raiderettes trailed the Cardinals 9-8 after one, but the second quarter saw the Cardinals grow their lead 18-10 heading into halftime, which was helped along by the Raiderettes 14 turnovers at the halfway mark.
The second half saw a different Mount Ayr team, as the offense found strength from Rachel Sobotka under the bucket, but the Raiderettes simply ran out of time as the contest ended on a three point try with 0.4 seconds left on the clock from Maddie Stewart. The shot missed and Central Decatur improved to 11-6 on the season, while the Raiderettes dropped to 13-4.
“We won the second half, but unfortunately, we dug a very bad hole in the first half by only scoring 10 and having 14 turnovers,” said coach Thad Streit. “I thought we showed a lot of heart and character in the last three minutes to put ourselves in a situation to win the game. If that mentality and character showed up in the first half, we would have won this game.”
The Raiderettes traveled to Nodaway Valley on Tuesday night.
The results of that game will appear in next week’s Record-News.
