Mt. Ayr 73, Red Oak 63
The Raiders squeezed in one last contest before district play last Thursday, February 11.
Mount Ayr hosted the Red Oak Tigers who came into the contest at 9-10.
The two teams stuck side-by-side throughout the contest as they jockeyed for the lead.
The Raiders took a 16-11 lead after the first eight minutes expired, but the next two quarters belonged to the Tigers as they outscored the Raiders 34-29 to head into the fourth quarter.
“Our toughness appeared tonight,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “That’s a team that can out rebound you, they are very athletic and our guys found some toughness in that fourth quarter.”
Heading into the fourth the game was tied at 45 points each.
“Our guys came into the huddle, yelling at eachother to just suck it up,” said coach Ruggles. “That’s just been our team this year. “I’ve had a lot of good teams, but I don’t know if I’ve had a team that has fought this hard. They refuse to give up on anything.”
The Raiders battled hard to overcome Red Oak, 73-63, after outscoring them in the fourth 28-18.
With the win, Red Oak fell to 9-11, while the Raiders closed out the season 16-4.
Along with the win, Payton Weehler became the winningest Raider basketball player with 75 wins to his name and Jaixen Frost set the single season scoring record after putting up 437 points this season, beating out the previous record held by Drew Larsen.
“I’m just trying to have fun playing basketball with my friends,” said Frost. “I didn’t even know I was coming up on it until coach Ruggles told me. It’s pretty cool, but there’s more records to go get, especially Dawson’s.”
Frost scored 32 points on the night, hitting 10-of-18 from the field and hitting 12-of-12 from the line to help push the Raiders passed the Tigers.
Weehler added 18, shooting five-of-12 which included three-of-seven from outside the arc.
As a team, the Raiders shot 42.1 percent on all fieldgoals and 25 percent from three-point territory, all from Weehler.
At the line, the Raiders were 22-of-25.
Mount Ayr grabbed 35 rebounds, 27 of which were defensive in relation to Red Oaks 32 total. The Raiders had seven steals and two blocks while creating 12 turnovers.
