AHSTW 59. Mt. Ayr 29
Last Friday the Raiderettes traveled to Avoca to face the AHSTW Lady Vikes.
Right out of the gate, AHSTW set the tone with a Claire Harris three.
Mount Ayr fell behind early before a short run brought them within seven as the buzzer sounded, bringing an end to the first eight minutes of play.
The Raiderettes were trailing 20-13.
The next 16 minutes were difficult for Mount Ayr, scoring only four points in the second and third quarters, while the Lady Vikes put up 26 off the hands of Kailey Jones, Claire Denning and Claire Harris.
Late in the fourth, coach Thad Streit pulled his starters and had a word with the seniors as they came off the floor, full of emotion.
“They’ve stuck it out for five years and gave Raiderette basketball good memories and I’m going to miss them,” said coach Streit. “Some others are going to have to fill in those shoes. We have a lot of tradition.”
The Lady Vikes held the Raiderettes to 10-of-36 for a 27.8 percent shooting efficiency, while Rachel Sobotka scored the Raiderettes only three of the night, after a team total 16 tries.
“They were probably a little bit better than I gave them credit for,” said coach Streit. “They shot lights out. They made six three’s. Part of that’s on me. I didn’t have them ready and we weren’t prepared. It was a mismatch from the beginning.”
Mount Ayr went to the line a total of 13 times and were good on eight.
The Lady Vike defense created 22 turnovers and 11 steals while grabbing 21 boards.
Leading the offense for Mount Ayr was Sobotka with nine points followed by Tegan Streit with six and four from Maddie Stewart.
MaKayla Jones, Channler Henle, Alexa Anderson, Tabby Henle and Halsie Barnes each scored two.
The Raiderettes ended their season 16-6 and graduate Rachel Sobotka, Channler Henle, MaKayla Jones, Hope Whittington and Alexa Anderson.

Mt. Ayr 40, CD 28
Last week the Raiderettes were able to advance to the regional semi-finals after winning a revenge game over the Central Decatur Cardinals on their home turf.
The Raiderettes previously fell to the Cardinals by three points in Mount Ayr and after the game, coach Streit stated they should have won and were upset by the loss.
Streit and his team were able to get the opportunity to get that win and after four quarters of play, did just that.
The game was back-and-forth, with the Raiderettes taking a first quarter lead, 12-9, but the Cardinals came back in the second to outscore the Raiderettes 13-8 and lead at halftime, 22-20.
The third quarter was a game of defense, with eight points scored between both teams, with Mount Ayr taking the lead, outscoring the Cards 6-2.
Mount Ayr was ready to put this one away in the fourth, racking up 14 points, while only allowing four.
Mount Ayr’s Channler Henle led the offense with nine points, followed by Rachel Sobotka with eight and Maddie Stewart with six.
The win put them in the semifinals against AHSTW in Avoca.
“Huge win for our girls,” said coach Streit. “It is always tough to get a win at CD and our girls came through tonight. We won this game at the free throw line and only having one second-half turnover were huge stats for us. Our defense was dominant in the second half only allowing six points. Great team win for our girls.”
